Just put the HK2221-6 in my trex with a 12 tooth pinion. With 3s a123 all I can say is holy crap! This motor is insane! I have found the Holy Grail combo for an efficient usable a123 setup. Headspeed is about 3200 with the 12 tooth. I tried 13 tooth but didn't measure headspeed because it scared the crap out of me! This motor is just as good or better than I have read.

I have been curious about this combo. Thanks for posting your thoughts.

How long are your flight times? How many MAH are you using?

Flight times are at least 7 min. I can't do hardcore 3d but I get 7 min easy stick banging out some tick-tocs! That's pretty damn good I think. I bought this motor at Readyheli. They had it for $49. A couple of other places had it as well but I have had good luck with readyheli and like buying from them.

I have no idea how many mahs I'm using. I just run it until it won't fly anymore. It doesn't hurt the a123s as I'm sure you know and it only takes 15 min to charge. I have 3 a123 battery packs made up so I can pretty much fly non-stop. They are a bit heavier than lipos of course but with this much power i really cant tell the difference. In fact, this setup is much quicker than the 430xl on my fp2170. I will be putting the 430xl on another trex and use it with lipos only. I plan on keeping this setup for a123 only.

Let's see a pictue of it with the pack installed and maybe a video? I have a 8 that I run on fp2170's and has a good amount of power. 15 minutes would be nice. Any link to these packs?

Very interesting jeffreydc. How are you configuring the cells and how is the pack mounted on your heli?

I will try to take some pics and post tonight if i get a chance. I bought a dewalt battery pack and broke it up into 3 separate packs and had one cell left. I paid about $100 off ebay. The pack is in a pyramid shape. I took the screw off the battery mount and let it drop straight down at 90 degrees to the lower tray. then I put velcro on the bottom mount and batter mount and with the battery pack standing upright it doesnt move at all and balance the heli pretty well.

The pics will help so I'll try and take some as soon as I get home.

Here are the pics:

I have also heard great things about the HK2221-8 motor but went with the 6 series because the high KV of 4400 works well with 3s a123 cells.

Looks good man. I like how well the pack fits with that little "modification" to the battery plate.

7 min - running 3200 HS, 4400kv, on 3s A123s... pretty impressive.

Can you time it next time out? Would be good to know for sure, for comparisons.

Did you calculate the HS... or tach it?

I will try to get some more accurate flight times tomorrow. I used a tack to get the headspeed. I want to check that again as well because I checked it towards the end of the last battery I flew today so it may be even a little higher. Since the battery is a lot heavier than a lipo, 3400 hs would probably be better for a hardcore 3d guy...which I am not. I intend on putting back the 13 tooth on and checking hs with that.

Wow, that's great how the battery plate just swings down like that. Never thought of it. Looks like you could use some CF or aluminum brackets to bolt onto the original holes in the frame that run to the plate to keep it vertical and steady throughout flight.

I thought about that gravy but with the velcro on the battery and plate all I have to do is push them together and it stays pretty damn still. I haven't had any problems with it like this yet. Then when I want to use lipos all i have to do is swing it up and put one screw in. It only takes a couple seconds to go from one setup to the other!

Hey jeffreydc,

that setup looks nice.....what is that balance connector that you put in the battery. Is it a computer connector??

Hey mjsb,

That is the balance connector for the fma pro charger. Its HUGE I know! You would think they would come out with a better connector but I really like the charger. It only takes 15 mins to charge up to 6s a123's and I can also charge my lipos with it as well. Plus it only cost me $100 bucks.

I have the jazz 40-6-18. Works great. I tried running 3s a123 on my align 35X esc and had the same cut off problems you are talking about.

revisiting this topic, and would like to hear feedback from others.

i have tried the following setups - both with 3s a123 2300 cells:

scorpion 2221-6 with 15T, cc35 ... lot of power, but flight time is about 3.5 minutes.

currently i am using neu 1107.1.5y, also 4400 kv rated motor. here i am using jazz 40. also with 15t flight time is longer - over 5 minutes, but i think it is not as powerful.

haven't had any problem with either ESC. i like the fast charging capability ...the weight difference between my setup and 3s lipo i think is about 30-40 grams, which is hardly noticeable to me since i do basic aerobatics only. safety factor is a big plus, in addition, i can fast charge these 3celled pack like crazy and not have to worry (while they are still warm )
