Heli-Baby enters the new millenium!

OK, so I don't have the original GI Joe for my model... so my heli is now being flown by one of the "Bratz Kidz".

Ready for the electronics now.

Take care that your pilot has tightened seat belts from good strengthness and a single pelvis belt is not enough. Additionally you should mount two shoulder belts, perhaps cross mounted, perhaps not, that you must try.

This is no joke!

When you have a crash in forward flight the pilot becomes a projectile like in real cars. I have that in my mind from one Baby crash: The pilot has really flown thru the canopy!! The number of change parts was small: both blade pairs, both shafts, nothing else. GI Joe had a broken arm and.....a canopy with an (unnessesary) hole in the front.
So fasten your seat belts please

Next build steps. Radio is now installed, all throws are correct, and CG appears to be right on! (Battery is inside vertical "instrument console" ).

Last Build Pics... next ones will be flight pics.

This kit went together really well. Improvements to the original design were well thought out and executed. I am looking forward to the pending flight tests!
Thanks Gerd!

tutelar,

That was superb!

I miss my HeliBaby!!!

I have been following this and another build thread-the quality of the new kits appears to be superb.

I noticed your comments about using the gyro.

My guess is that you will probably not be running a governor!
(LOL!).

Good luck with your beautiful new (old) machine!

First Forward Flight!

Probably a little windy for the first real flight of a fixed-pitch heli of this size...

After bouncing it a couple of times, I started to get the feel of anticipating power requirements about 3 to 5 seconds ahead. Obviously, need less power into the wind and more power with the wind.

Spectrum DX7 radio with rate gyro.

Excellent reproduction kit from minicopter.de - Gerd is a great guy to deal with!

Enjoy!

Man, were you ever grinning after landing!

That was great!

I want to post a link to a thread on another forum, where another person is building a Helibaby:

http://www.rchelimag.com/forum/show...08&page=1&pp=10

Perhaps the two of you can compare notes!

Gerd at [www.minicopter.de] is definitely a great guy!

A small package arrived in the mail as an upgrade to the original kit.

This tail pitch slider bridge is made of brass with a bearing, so it will not wear out.

This definitely will help keep this retro bird in the air for a long time to come.

Thanks again Gerd!

Here some new experiences I have made recently. Perhaps someone has had similar problems and this can be a solution.
The first point were continuous tracking problems with one pair that were not to solve. With increasing headspeed the tracking became worse and worse and the reason was not to find on the first view. The surface of both wooden blades has looked similar and weight was the same. The sawed ends of the blades have also looked similar at roots and tips. So this was a unsolved mystery until last Wednesday. That day I had the idea that it would not be bad to close all open wood structures at the ends with 5 min Epoxy for IRCHA (because the US fuel is more aggressive in my experience). I started with the pair I could not track. What I suddently saw after adding the glue was this:

and that:

It is obvious now that this inner wood structure is causing a different torsion stiffness. During spooling up the blade with the white tip is faster going upwards than the blade with the blue tip.
So each one who has a similar problem should do this test. The structure of both blades should look equal from angle and direction.
In kits this is of course not to control, so we add now to each kit two pairs of blades with similar weights. Then at least one good pair will be the result. All that have ordered a Heli-Baby and have tracking problems should contact me and inform me about blade weights, they will get a similar new set for making new pair(s).

The second news is the clutch: Latest tests have shown that the Heli-Baby is much better to control in sinking when the clutch is opening a little bit later. I recommend 1.8 mm, delivery is 2.2 mm. Use a round file or mill it a little bit down. Enlarge the inner bore, do not file at the outside.

Finally the canopies in all kits are ready cut and glued now. What I have seen on customers pics has initiated me to this conclusion. The material on the one hand and the difficult positioning of the canopy halfes is not easy. As spare both versions will be continued.

Good luck now and perhaps ... see you on IRCHA

P.S.(forgotten): This is the modernized version of the Heli-Baby, the "Super-e-Heli-Baby" and now in german/american cooperation. Head (with soft O-rings) and swash are from the Century Swift (spares easy to get), blades are from Ikarus eco8 (also easy), Koehler actro 18-5, 6s/4000 packs for 9 minutes flight time. Has now about 150 flights, very easy to control, good flight stability and if there is any interest the Super-e-Baby will get some brothers soon

Very nice Gerd, what parts do I need to convert my Minicopter Heli-Baby (nitro) to electric?

Gerd: I hope you bring spares to IRCHA - especially the pre-glued canopy.

Thanks and happy flying!

Hi Gerd,

In regards to the "Super-e-Heli-Baby", setup, are you locking the head as a fixed-pitch? I can't see the correct number of links to the swashplate in the provided picture.

So many heli's - too little time...

No, it´s colective pitch like the former Super-Heli-Baby.

Here a detail, the trick is to mount the third servo also in the rear plywood (to avoid different sinus mixing parts from the 20 degree angled rear plate) direct under the (old) elevator servo (which is now left roll servo) and then link it with a long double-ball-raced bar to the third point. This has cost some thoughts (about one month) and as often when you have a good idea the realization is very fast then (one single day).

Ready canopies? How to pack it to the luggage? I will add some the delivery to Joe Howard (East Coast Scale) and you can get it from him.
You have the choice now between PET canopies (very transparent, but not invisible to glue) and PVC (classic material, a little bit milky, but glue is invisible).

Nitro conversion during fall. I must think about the placement of the third servo again...the damned tank...

Why cant we have an original Super Heli-Baby collective setup? I collect Schluter helis and would gladly buy such a setup.

Simply answer: Too small the interest, too high the costs. If you are searching such a rotor, look on german ebay, there are sometimes old Super-Heli-Baby parts in offer.
