I am still tempted. Almost ordered one yesterday until I started reading the reviews again. Most of the negative points about the DP-1 really doesn't pertain to AP though. The only point that concerned me is the manual infinity focus on the DP-1. I have read that the manual focus dial may shift too easily from infinity. I have to look at the pictures of the camera closer to see what I can do about that.

Right now I am waiting for the Gentled IR trigger so I can play with the Olympus e-420.

I could not warrent the spend on the DP1

So bought the Panasonic DMC-FX35 needing a lighter camera than the A640 for a SS setup and so far VERY pleased with the results only issue is there is not as much manual control as the A640.
Hopefully will have the first ap shots off it this weekend

I've been looking at this camera too. It looks good on paper, but I'm wondering if it's worth the $. Here's an interesting comparison:
http://www.seriouscompacts.com/2008...erformance.html
Of course, high ISO isn't of much concern for AP. The thing that struck me in these samples was the flat color rendering.
I read of complaints of slow processing also.

Badllarma....The FX35 looked good, but I read lots of complaints about smearing due to high noise reduction and poor IQ. Maybe you'll have different results. I'd love to see some samples when you get it airborne.

The ultimate compact has to be out there somewhere.

Anybody tried one of the Ricoh cams? Here is a new one similar to the DP1: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/spe..._grdigital2.asp

The Ricoh seems nice but the sensor is no bigger than most point and shoots. The only reason why the DP-1 is so interesting despite all the short comings is the sensor size.

I couldn't resist so I ordered one. Unfortunately it is on backorder right now.

Hey SeismicCWave,
Add me to the list of people interested in your DP1 experience when it arrives. It looks like Popphoto did a test on it and gave it good marks. http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/518...-sigma-dp1.html
12 sec write time for a single Raw is a little long, but if the IQ is stellar, it wouldn't be a dealbreaker.

Does the DP-1 have plastic or glass lenses? ... it would be nice to find a PnS that was not such a compromise and with the larger sensor ... although Nikon has downsized the dx sensors from the d-series as well. My problems encountered with cameras in f/s aircraft were based upon the cement used to hold the individual optics in place degrading over time & vibrations which resulted in less than optimal results (even with the camera spending most of its cockpit life residing in my flightsuit). I'm still learning, but have stayed with the DSLR concept for the ability to change out lenses and/or select the one most appropriate for the task at hand.

I believe it's all glass ...

"Glass mold aspherical lens provide correction for all types of aberrations and capture accurate, full color image information."

from here.

I don't imagine they would skimp on the lens quality in a camera like this ....

Some cool new sample pics here if you haven't seen them!

Hey meflyjeep,
Are you shooting through a camera door, heli, or trying to shoot out a window? I would think it would be difficult to shoot this lens full scale and not get a lot of the plane/gear in the shot with that wide of a lens.

Cycling Times

According to its review on imaging resource, the cycling time is around 17 seconds for a single image in RAW mode & it also mentions that JPEG mode isnt worth using. This seems incredibly slow to me for AP work.

Hmmm, looking at the times in the Imaging Resource review makes me realise just how slow this camera is!

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/DP1/DP1A6.HTM

Hmmmmmm not so good ... particularly as I often want to do a continuous burst for a panorama (my present A620 can do about 2fps until the card is full - that's the sort of speed we need!)

Thanks for pointing that out Fionn

This definitely won't be a good burst mode cam. I read 12 seconds on Popphoto's review. Probably good for lining up a good single shot, but I'm not convinced it's worth the $ for just that...unless like I said, it produces stellar results. Maybe the next generation will be faster. Everywhere I read about it, that is the main complaint.

DP-1 first impression

I received my Sigma DP1 today from Adorama. First impression is very good. Charged up the battery and did a few pictures with the RAW mode. Not really all that slow. It is slow compare to a DSLR but very comparable to a point and shoot. No, I don't have scientific comparison data. This is a pure gut feel reaction from me. So why do I feel I can do a gut feel. Well, I have a lot of cameras and I shoot with all of them. So I can compare subjectively. I feel that the DP-1 is no slower than the Canon G9 or the Leica D-Lux 3 in RAW mode. You can't do a burst mode and fire off 3 shots in 3 seconds but the RAW write speed is not as bad as 17 seconds per image. I use my fastest SD card which may make a difference. I am using the Sandisk Extreme Dugatti 4 GB.

I took a bunch of RAW image and the process that took the longest is to find a program that I can use to view the RAW. After playing with the Sigma latest RAW program I have decided that unless I am shooting for money JPEG in highest resolution mode is probably good enough for some great AP images.

So I took some obligatory flower photos for you to check out. These were shot in JPEG and fine tuned in Photoshop CS-3 Camera Raw.

Oops, the fine tuning didn't save to the jpeg file. So the files are straight from the camera including the messed up rotation. I will get some better samples and post again.

Not bad, lots of bokeh. Did you shoot it with the Aperature wide open?

I had it on program mode for now since I am not familiar with the camera yet. The images were pretty blown out as they came out of the camera. I looked at the metadata file and they were all shot at f4 which is wide open for the DP-1.

A 28 mm lens on a big sensor is not very good for flower closeups. I will test if the remote work with the USB cable tomorrow. Once I can trigger it I am going to take it up in the Trex 600.

Here are the tweaked images:

Yeah, the white was a little blown out. I'd love to see some aerial shots.

Thanks,
