So what did we have as far as policies go? Anyone? What do you guys think?

What is a vintage heli?

The main question seems to be what constitutes a vintage heli, right? This does not have an easy answer. If we just do a straight year cutoff, like 10 years, we would include the early Raptors as had been previously discussed. Maybe 12 years might be a more appropriate cutoff (if we want to use a straight cutoff). Would a 1996 model be considered an antique / vintage heli?

If we dont do a year cutoff, the other alternative seems to be legislating certain brands and models. This may prove more troublesome and create complaints (ie why wasnt MY heli included!)

I think it has to be a year-cutoff but the question remains, how may years? 10, 12, 14??

I have only a slight clue...

I proposed at one time that 1978 be the cut-off year. Why? I dunno... Yes I do - Because that's when the Heli-Boy was introduced and everything changed. The aerobatic heli was then a regular model. Then I thought 1980, as it's an even year and GMP was in full swing with the Cricket and Competitor. Can't leave those out, can we? Then I pushed to 1990, why? Again, can't put my finger on it.

Thinking that the models available prior to that time would be more limited in aerobatic performance would cut down on the antics and "dangerous" maneuvers in our part of the flying site maybe.

Since we are in a forum section of RR called "Antiques or Out Of Business", what about letting all the orphaned machines participate? If it's no longer being actively supported by a manufacture, it's OK? But I can think of at least one company still providing parts and full support, Miniature Aircraft, and that would then disqualify all the old X-Cells (1987 and later) as parts are still plentiful. Not much risk totaling one of those.

Hirobo is obviously still around but getting correct parts for earlier heli's is getting tough (blue Shuttles, Eagle MK 1, etc) but not impossible.

Anyone else have ideas?

You could have two classes like SAM does, Antique and Nostalgia.

As a starting suggestion, 1978 and earlier is an Antique, 1993 and earlier is a Nostalgia.

Keep it Simple

If I had to throw my vote out there, I would say let's just make it a rolling 15-year age requirement, so this year's IRCHA (2008) would require any heli from 1993 or earlier to be considered part of the antique / vintage gathering. Next year, it would be 1994 or earlier, etc.

Rationale - 20 years is too big a time gap and cuts off all the later GMP stuff, and many of the other good vintage CP machines. On the other end of the spectrum, 10 or 12 years arguably brings in a lot of hardware that is very modern in comparison and would dilute the direction of the group.

I was going to suggest a rolling time frame but it jumped my mind. 1993 - I'll bring a wild Concept 30 SR-X out and scare the pants off everyone with a 2300 RPM head speed and flash-bang cyclic response! Doesn't exactly fall into the "Spirit of the Event" does it? Daggonit, this is a tough one to call...

List

What about a list?
The Senior Pattern Association has a list of Airplanes that qualify.

Thanks.....Dave

This is rightfully your baby, and it should be a call at

your behest...

antiques, and many of the time frames mentioned are laughably

incompatible, and desires just for the sake of inclusion

defeat the intent.

However, IRCHA did not become the biggest for not allowing participation.

Perhaps bringing whatever you like, but calling a TRUE antique

date and category brings everyone together for joint pursuit of

what this hobby is all about.

I do agree with that! It's very difficult to draw lines.

Not so much that it's my baby, I just want other pilots that are flying this "technological" stuff and want to complain everytime there blades go in and out of track!!! HAHA. To see what started it all.

I really don't care what anyone brings to IRCHA. I just would like people to restore what they have and bring it to the field.

I agree ... if you have something that is old or unique and new ,,, I want to see it again ... I don't want anyone to feel they can't bring something that most of us will want to see again...even if it is a bent frame excell or a souped up concept 30 ... BRING THEM
Putting restrictions on things always takes the fun out of it all.

This is true! Making it self-regulated will probably be OK. If someone wants to try to bring a first gen Raptor and pass it off as an antique, fine but they will suffer the snickers of their peers

I agree with the direction that V22chap has proposed.

This will likely be self-policing... only people who are interested in vintage/antique helis will likely participate.

Keep it open, so that everyone who wants to participate, can participate. This is really about exchange of information, reflection on past accomplishments, and celebration of progress.

If there are prizes or awards, whoever provides the prize or award can make the restrictions to determine who gets that specific recognition.

But let's ensure there is as much interest and excitement as possible -- the more the merrier!

I have been reading your posts with great interest. I am excited about what this will bring to the show for all those interested.
Many excellent questions, many excellent responses. Self policing appears to be one of the best options, whatever option is adopted, best of luck. IRCHA will try to assist as best we can.
