Hi All,

Just thought I would let you know, that after someone very kindly helped themselves to all my heli gear from my garage over New Year, I have finally got my new Raptor 30

The weather even broke enough here in the South West UK for me to fly it on Sunday afternoon

Man it feels great to be back in the air, I spent the first tank with the bird all over the place just getting used to it and the new FF9 TX I also got

I put 5 tanks through it by the end of the day, albeit each one only lasting around 6 or 7 minutes because the engine is running really rich because it is being broken in at the moment, but for hovering and gentle flight it is fine, besides with it being so accurate with all the upgrades and MS carbon blades, I found it a bit difficult even keeping it in a stable hover

The next bird is on it's way, and I should hopefully pick it up on Friday or Saturday so I can fly that on Sunday, I am really looking forward to trying the Sceadu 50

Peter.

Lots of Other Things

Hi James,

Yeah, I know what you mean, there are lots of other things there they could have had, including £90 bottles of Whisky and numerous other expensive bottles of spirits and Champagne, but they kindly left all that !!!

At least I have one of my two new birds, and I have also taken the opportunity to get a Raptor 60, while I am about it

That takes my fleet up to;

Piccolo - In the middle of installing the collective pitch upgrade, (just got the parts I need) so I can finish the job

Raptor 30 - Every possible upgrade

Sceadu 50 - Most upgrades

Raptor 60 - Most Upgrades

All I need to do now is learn to fly them all properly

Peter.

Nope !!

Hi Stuart,

Good to hear from you again !

No the police have not got anywhere with the theft, they have set the journalists on me

I will appear in this weeks local rag holding either a semi upgraded Piccolo that doesn't look like a heli, or a FF8 U Super TX !!!

As far as the investigation goes, there has been nothing, I think that the police have maybe given up hope now anyway.

I am happier about that now I have started to get the new kit, the Raptor 30 I have is superb, being professionally built with every possible upgrade.

I tell you what, the FF9 takes a bit of getting used to I have removed the ratchet from the collective, so it is silky smooth now, but I am finding that the cyclic stick was much more sensitive to movements on the FF8, therefore when I am trying to hover, I am finding that I am under-correcting

I am glad to hear that your Raptor 50 is up and running, You sound like you are really pleased with it

I too am running my new OS .32 rich, and I am probably going to lean it out a little this afternoon, as I have managed to grab a few hours off work to take it out.

What do you think of the OS 50, as I have one coming in the new Sceadu 50 that I should get in a week or so (I found out last night that the model shop is still waiting for the GY401's to come in) so I will have to wait a bit longer for the Sceadu.

How did you get on with the tail on the 50, as I have heard that a number of people have put the 60 size tail on the 50.

I have also taken the opportunity to get a Raptor 60, as some of the parts I lost, like spare servo's, a gyro, 2 .32 engines etc. Have all added up to a Raptor 60, and as I have all new kit, I really don't have a use for those spares, so I though it best to exchange them for part of the Raptor 60, and pay the other part myself.

The only problem recently is the weather has not been good enough to fly, although Sunday afternoon gave us a break

I guess that you and I will both be spending lots of time at our flying fields, playing with our new babies

Cheers,

Peter.

The OS 50 is a powerhouse. It will throw a raptor 30 around like it is a feather. It's easy to tune and runs great either on a tune pipe or a muffler. If your going with a tune pipe, I suggest that you use a 60 size pipe. (ie Curtis muscle pipe works great). Lots of power and more power and more power. Hope you get your children (helis) a safer place to rest...

OS 50 & Expo

Hi Smokinjo,

Thanks for that wonderful description of the OS 50, sounds like a real screamer !!!

I am really looking forward to trying the Sceadu 50 now

Hi Stuart,

I am glad you use the Hatori pipe, as it is the same sort of pipe as I use (or will use !!) on all my heli's, I seem to have fallen into the OS / Hatori / Futaba combination, and well, it works great for me

Interesting you mention about the gyro Normal versus Heading Hold problems as that is one that is very dear to my heart at the moment, as I am still having problems which I am assuming is gyro related on the sim with the old FF8U Super radio.

When I used to fly the old heli on the FF8 I didn't have any expo at all. I also flew the sims without any expo on the FF8, but since getting the new Raptor and the FF9 I have taken to using 40% on Elevator and Aileron, but nothing on the rudder.

I find this much easier to keep a relatively stable hover, as I am having one or two difficultis moving from the FF8 to the FF9. The stick movements on the FF9 are far smoother than the FF8, but I am finding them less sensitive than the FF8, and therefore I tend to under-correct whilst hovering.

I went out yesterday, and got much better with the radio / heli combination, I can now hover the new heli even in gusting winds that we had yesterday afternoon.

The wind shure makes it fun, as a few times a gust came up and must have got underneath the rotor wash, as the heli shot upwards about 4 foot

I am having the same problem with the fuel, I run Coolpower 15%, I have taken the heli out twice and have had maybe a total of an hour in the air and I have already burnt a gallon

The FF9 really is a great radio though, I wasn't sure I really wanted one, I would have just been prepared to stick with the spare FF8 I still had and put the cost of the replacement towards the Raptor 60. But now I have the FF9, I am really glad I do, it is so easy once you get used to navigating the menus. In fact I set mine up more or less from scratch without even looking at the manual

How do you find the 9253 servo? I use and agian it is one of my default items now, the 9450, with on the Raptor 30 a CSM 540, and on the Sceadu and Raptor 60 the GY401.

I am not overly happy with the 540, as it appears to be a little twitchy and very sensitive to adjustment, so I might swap it out at some point for a GY401, as quite apart from anything else, I like to stick with Futaba kit.

Cheers,

Peter.

GY401

Hi Stuart,

Appologies for the delay.

Thanks for the shining review of the GY401, I have in fact ordered 3 of them, one of which I have had to change to the CSM 540, because the rest of the Raptor 30 was ready and we were only waiting on the gyro.

So in the interests of getting a bird flying again quickly, I have changed the order to 2 GY401's and a CSM540.

Although I am really glad I have the Raptor to fly now, and the 401's still haven't come in yet (although they may have arrived today, I hope!) I am probably beginning to regret getting the 540, as I am still not totally satisfied with it. In fact a friend of mine has one on his Futura SE, and was flying it last Sunday when suddenly the tail began to hunt.

We put that down to the high winds that day, so when I fly with him again tomorrow we will see.

On the Raptor 30 I had stolen, I had only just installed a new GY502, and had not even flown it with the new gyro, so I never knew what that one was like. But from what I have read here, in essence it is only a 401 with a few extra setup options.

I may well change the 540 for a 401 in the near future, so if you are interested in buying the 540 from me it's probably available !!!

I couldn't believe what happened on the last flight of the day last Sunday, I had just been hovering fairly low, maybe 4 foot off the ground to use up the remainder of the fuel, as I always tend to let it flame out before packing it away.

Sure enough it flamed out and I landed with no problems with the nose pointing down a small sloap, then whilst the main rotor were still tunring, the wind got underneath it and lifted the tail off the ground just enough for the main rotors to touch the ground, and wallop !!! BOOM STRIKE !!

I have now replaced the MS 550's, Flybar, Boom Brace, Boom and the tail push rod

All is well now though, I have it back together and am looking forward to flying it again tomorrow.

Happy Flying !!

Cheers for now
Peter.
