No problem. I still have issues with the Piccolo Copyright/Patents thing, but that's probably a career issue for me. I work as a senior design engineer for Northrop Grumman. Intellectual property theft is rampant on the Pacfic rim, so this just hit too close to my livelyhood. The product is well worth the price of admission but i wouldn't recommend the RTF full setup to anyone. Separates provide a lot more flexibility and I have found, greater flght duration.

I have one set up with an AstroFlight 010 10 turn and a Castle Creations ESC, Hitec HS-50 servos, GWS 50 ESC for the tail and a CSM HLG 200 HH gyro. Using 2s packs of Kokam 1020 mah LiPolys and getting 20-22 min before GE consistently. The other is pretty much a GWS bird with an Ikarus 310 tuning motor.

If Century doesn't do something about the tech/customer support issue at Milpitas, they are going to have the shortest run of hot sales in recorded history.

BTW ... No Harm. No foul.

My New Hummingbird

I just won a Hummingbird at the St. Louis fun fly this weekend (door prize-thanks St. Louis Whirlybirds) and just thought I would drop a note and see if anyone had any comments on the setup I ordered to get it in the air.

GWS Pico+ Servos (x2)
GWS R4P Receiver
GWS ICS100 Speed Control
GWS ICS 50 Speed Control
ETECH 2 Cell Li-Pol
CSM HLG200 HH Gyro

Running JR 8103 TX.

I held off on the better motors for now. If I really get into this, which I'm sure I will, I will be upgrading to something brushless and with the money already spent I will only have to replace the motor and controller.

Now, where is that darn UPS guy?!?!?



Comments and suggestions on "required" upgrades appreciated. Also, are there any humingbird websites out there? I haven't had much luck finding any yet.

No real mods necessary - I would have to say that a main motor swap is almost a necessity though.

As far as some noce mods - The mast collar is a good one. I have run a few different motors now and am now wunning a Razormotors.com RZ-350 on 2X1200mah E-Tech Lipoly cells and am absolutely thrilled with the power and duration of this combo. I got the motor and ESC (Phoenix 10) from castlecreations.com. Both motor and ESC made in teh good ol USA and work flawlessly! If you are considering going brushelss, this is the way to go in my opinion. Use the stock pinion and switch to Hornet fixed pitch carbon blades and I know you will be a happy camper for a long time.

Good luck with it. Your initial setup sounds fine and should work well.

I was thinking about the blades, but I'm not sure I'm ready for them yet. Being my first micro-electric and planning on flying it indoors, as well as my stage of experience (learning nose in), I have to consider how well blades will hold up and how much it is going to cost to replace them. $15 vs. $40 a pop on blades can add up quickly if I keep planting it into the entertainment center. So I guess the question is "how well do the blades hold up (plastic and carbon) in a crash?"
How about the tail rotor?

As for the shaft collar, I planned on doing that from all the posts I have seen about how much better it makes things.

I was thinking about a motor upgrade too, but not sure if I am going to do it yet. I need to just get the thing flying and see how much I like it before I keep upgrading it.

My Hummingbird Setup:

Stock motor (for now)
I've ordered an Orion Elite Micro Modified Motor
I've been experimenting with batteries. I think the E-Tec 1200 Li-Poly is the way to go.
GWS 4P Receiver
Hitec HS-50 Servos
Hummingboard Controller
CMS 180 Gyro (case removed)

I mounted the RX and controller board in the "box" behind the main shaft. They both fit without any cutting and I just left the cover off.

The gyro is mounted just below the tail boom on the back of the frame (works so well, that it almost feels as if it's a heading holder)

I installed the main shaft collar and swash plate ball. The SP ball was probably not needed, tho.

To correct a tendency to pitch up dramatically in forward flight, I made a stiffener for the head; I used two ball links for a Shuttle with longer bolts holding the blades on. I used a lock nut under each blade with the bolt heads on top of the ball links.

I broke a blade at the root trying to fly when it was too windy (STOO-PID). I repaired it and then lamintated the bottom of each blade with carbon fiber tissue and finishing resin. The blades are much stiffer and seem to have plenty of strength (although I haven't crashed it since the repair).

Forward flight is much better now, but it still doesn't like wind.

I've found that the blades will not break, unless they hit something hard. If you fly it into a bed or sofa or other soft furnishing, you will get away with it. If they hit something hard, like a glass door or a metal chair leg then they will break, but you can CA them back together and re-balance and fly!

I wonder if the blades are different now than when the heli was first made available? I broke my first blade just flexing the tip in an attempt to adjust the pitch slightly. The second I broke on a metal leg - of course that one broke.

But others I broke on rather gental tip-overs. After several sets, I finally gave up and got the CF blades.

I have hit metal legs, metal tanks, hit hard after a loop, hit myself in the face (ouch) and the blades are still in great shape.
