| Testing my time/date/production memory, the AMA review of the Dubro Hughes 300 kicked this "fean" up a notch. AMA also ran ad's for the 505.
|
By 'AMA' are you referring to American Aircraft Modeler magazine, AAM for short? I don't remember seeing any DB H300 reviews there, only in RCM magazine. I still have all those old issues. Minor point here but lead on...

| One day in spring of 1973 while visiting my LHS (Andy's Hobby's in Elmsford NY) I saw he had a 505 on the shelf. We walked out..."hand in rotor".(Plus, it was the only heli I could scrounge up enough cash for. The 300 @ $350.00 wasnt going to happen)

Price was certainly a big factor in the sales of the 505. Retail price of $125 was so much less than any other heli on the market - $425 for a Kavan Jet Ranger, something over $500 for the Hegi Bell Cobra (I think) and then there's the Hughes you mentioned. I let the 505 go by my RADAR and zeroed in on the 300 because an employee of the company I worked for had a "basement hobby shop" and could get a significant discount on the 300, out the door for $290. I really had the hots for the Kavan but it was way out of reach and I still had to buy an engine for $75. In 1974, $500 vs $290: A no brainer. Well, that was one of the biggest mistakes of my life and I didn't learn a darn thing about flying RC heli's in the year I beat on that poor Hughes. But that's another story and will be detailed when I post my Hughes 300 videos.

| MRC F710 Radio, K&B 40. Only progressed to hover( think it had anything to do with the training gear? lol), but it was a thrill!
|
Tell me, were you bullied by wind? Did you have to wait for dead-calm conditions before even thinking of flying your 505? At least you can claim success even it it was only hovering. That MRC system was an early Futaba in disguise. A very good radio I understand.

| The Dubro Tri-Star/Enstrom Body was next! Thanks for asking, this brings back many fond memories.
|
'Memory Lane' is what this is all about. We'll have to get on the Tri-Star subject much later on. First I need to assemble the parts I own into a flyable 'Star. Hold those thoughts! THX
