finished it finally after a few months

well after some long months and getting to know my wife again its finally finished I finished the "HOOKER" after my fathers chinook that he flew in Painfield WA with the 92nd Trans CO. I was wondering if any of you out there have any advise on things like how these chinooks fly/handle? are they really bad as they seem? and thoughts are helpful thanks!

ch-47 flyer..... Help

That is one very nice looking heli you have built...
I have the CH-46 Vertol from Hirobo (see my gallery) and have it flying quite nicely... there are a lot of difference between flying/setting up one of these compared to a conventional machine....and if I can be of any help please feel free to contact me by pm with any questions you might have... also HIROBO is here on RR along with a few others that have these flying that can give you a lot of support...
My first questions would be, what have you flown so far, and where are you with all orientations???
And then what equipment do you have in this heli...

Looking forward to hearing from you....Stan

DOORMAN
well to awnser your first question, I have been flying fixed wings for about ten years now with a few scale comps. but as for flying choppers I've only been in it for a little over two years now and have flown many small electrics to my .30 raptor but as for scale this is my first! I feel content flying helis in a scale maner but nothing 3D at all. from what I hear this chinook seems to fly much different then normal conventional hellis. In this one I have a hyper OS .50 and a Futaba 9 CH CHP radio. the orentation im not worried about its wondering how sensitive it will be! Thanks

How Sensitive.....

First, let me say that I am sorry for messing up the Tech Model Products post....and no ill intended.... Stan

Well, not to over simplify how this unit flies, I would have to say that I think that it is less sensitive then say, a full 3D capable setup, but then there is actually no true comparison between the machines...
The difference that I would say, is truly in the set up and then the different "timing" of flying a flybarless head.... quite doable, but not by everyone comfortably... the inputs actually seem to be a little slower, or "floaty" (?? is that a word??) response and that is what "throws" people off.... you have to learn to fly ahead of the machine, but also stay behind the inputs because they will not take affect or hold like a normal set up.... in other words it may take two or three commands to do the same thing one movement on your fly barred machine will do...
But the set up and testing of this heli is crucial and needs to be fully understood to make it work so that it is flyable... the instructions are excellent, BUT in broken English and you have to look several times to get the proper meaning and settings... but once you do that, you will have a machine that will perform and do it quite well...
Very important points:
Timing/phasing on the heads, and controls set for no interaction
Belt tightness for the rear head
Front pitch just about 1/2 degree ahead of the rear head
swashplates move in proper directions for every command
Blade balancing
CG is in the correct location
Headspeed and with a smooth throttle curve (runs like a governor without one!!!)

Also I have 9252 servos on all but the throttle... a bit overkill, but not really.... all of the servos are working through gyros so the fast and accurate response of the servo is a big help in making this heli flyable..

I have re-read this and it makes sense to me, and I hope that it will to you also... but please feel free to contact me if I can help clarify something for you.

Best of Luck.... Stan

Pitch Settings

I checked the manual and it calls for low @ -2 to - 1.5, Hover +5.5 to + 6 and High +9
Once you get both heads set like this, and all is tracked and running properly (I used calipers to make all the linkage the same) then you will want to increase the pitch in the forward head by + 1 turn on each link to the blades. This should get you into a good starting position....
I also pm'd you that I will be glad to scan some of the manual if it will be of any help to you, but I will need a regular email address to send those.

Good Luck, Stan
