Vario Sky Fox - Benzin - Evolution - Xtreme > Govenors for XLV?

I'm having a hard time choosing a suitable governor for the RPM range of the XLV. My SPH5 has one built into the ecu but I'm building a second XLV for gas. The govs I've seen work above 1000 rpm's. Anybody using a gov on your XLV, please submit the type and pics of the install. Thanks,

For the gas machine I think you could program a fake gear ratio in a GV-1 and get usable results.

There is this for a 10mm main shaft:

It puts three magnets for the sensor to pick up.

If you can put this on the half shaft, or something like it, you could get the signal you need to run a GV-1.

I take that back, the easiest thing would be to get an optical sensor and point it to the belt. Paint two white stripes on the belt and set the head speed double what you want it to be.

That's down stream of the one way auto bearing. If the engine quites, so does the readout. I need that readout for an OSD to maintain rotor rpm in an auto.

The XLV is a 12mm shaft, but I like that idea for the magnets.

Helicenter, I'd rather have a plug and play solution but I'm open for these ideas as well as a backup.

I am coming up blank for the off the shelf stuff.

Just checked.....lowest ratio the GV-1 will do is 3:1.

So to do the half RPM thing you will have to have six magnets on the main shaft somehow.

I have six magnets for the Inspire OSD. Maybe I can double duty those along with the GV-1. BTW, Futaba is my prefered radio and the GV-1 was my first pick for compatability. Thanks for the info and ideas...

Well done Dan - you beat me to it! Looks like a real docile handling machine. Nice exhaust you are running

I too want to run a govenor on my Wren XLV. The was a post on the turbine forum about doing this on a Predator Wren conversion. I realise you want this for your gasser XLV but the sensor magnet installation may work for you too.

Thanks Paul. It's been ready for it's maiden flight for a long while but work has kept me busy. How do you like the decals? They are from a stock FG MT-5. I like them better on the XLV. I had to peice the top one together but there was enough for symetry in the layout. I want to get the three blade JetCat version going now. It's a very fun machine so far.

Check out my Gallery. Plenty of pics of it.

The engine is a Zenoah G26 with a DDM Racing 27.2 cc conversion with a av517 - Zenoah HP Carburetor Kit and iridium plug. Filter is a high flow. Runs very well but it seems to want to run at a higher rpm. Maybe a gearing change if possible. This motor is rated at 4.5 hp.

Hot engine!

In my experience with running a G260RC engine, it will not like running too fast otherwise it will vibrate. What engine RPM do you have now Dan?

Great pics in your gallery. I have never seen an XLV up close before. I intend to use two tail rotor servos in tandem and can see there is just enough room to do this. Mine will have the 4 blade tail rotor and apparently this needs some serious effort to move. I am sure you will be okay with a single servo and 3 bladder.

When will you be flying the 3 blade head?

Hello Paul,

If my math is correct, it comes out to 12,748.089 engine RPM with a main rotor speed of 860 rpm. The tail comes out to 3,541.136 rpm....Again, that's if my math is good. I used teeth count from the manual pdf. I'm not real sure but the engine rpm seems higher than what I'm hearing. Anyone know what a G260RC redlines at?

The T/R servo seems fine. The 9206 hasn't stalled yet and I forgot what it's like to have the tail chase the nose. It's a missed fun factor, especially with this lazy type of flying.

The three blade comes with the turbine...can't waite.

That is high for a 260. When I ran a 260 in one of my Benzines I found that 10,000rpm was okay as far as vibrations go but this was with a lightened piston. It will easily rev past your 12,700 rpm (I briefly flew mine at 13,000rpm)but it may vibrate badly.

Then again, this engine is different from a stock 260 so maybe it has been balanced for higher rpm running?

Not the same engine, but my Hanson pro 3D 26 in my p-gas ran quite well at 13,500. It just had to have a load on it.

It was for 3D but it swung 720mm blades at 1900+ HS with a 7.07:1 ratio.

It ran great.
