Hey Guys, Happy Thanksgiving !! Just curious on how many heli pilots use just thumbs or use the pinch grip on the sticks, whats the percentage of each? I used the pinch from the start and don't feel like I have full control with just thumbs, but I guess the way you start is the way you keep doing it. Has anyone ever switched syles ?

I fly pinch. I feel more in control that way. I am always afraid that if I use thumbs I will slip off the stick. I also don't feel like my thumbs have the same amount of "travel" as the pinch grip.

hi Doug
i learned to fly planes , with thumbs and no neck strap , it's very comfortable and i feel i have good control

i learned to fly helis sitting down and pinch grip , and i was stuck taking a 5 gallon plastic bucket to the field to sit on while i flew , tried a neck strap and it didn't help , i finally figured out i could stand up if i used a TX tray

i still feel comfortable flying planes standing , thumbs , and no strap , but helis i need a TX tray and pinch

i think once you learn you are pretty much stuck , i was able to transition from sitting to standing , as long as i could suport the edges of both hands on my TX tray

i feel i have better stick control with a pinch grip and helis seem to need it , planes seem to be a bit more forgiving , have a great thanksgiving , dana

When I started flying planes I flew with thumbs ,but when I started flying helis a guy at our field told me I should learn to fly with the pinch method.. Well , now I fly only with the pinch method , I have so much more control with the pinch!!

I'm a relative newb (less than 3 months). I started with thumbs. Then I saw Alan Szabo Jr's video and caught a glimpse of the pinch. I've heard/read the horror stories of 'dumb thumb symdrone' and don't want it happen to me. So, over the past couple of weeks, I'm trying to transistion to pinch, but still find it much more comfortable to use thumbs. It seems logical that more precise control can be attained while using the pinch. Plus, the fingers tend to keep the thumbs in check, and vice-versa.

I was also wearing the radio too low on the neck strap. I had it down near my belt and stting flat. I moved it so its almost at mid- chest and angled slightly downward. I found this made the pinch more tolerable.

I use thumbs on the cyclic, and pinch on the collective. I need to learn to use pinch on the cyclic as during heavy pirouetting maneuvers my thumb likes to slide off the stick.

Even rhymes agree that pinch is cinch and thumb is dumb

There's an ergonomic for successful pinch method:
Let your arms hang relaxed from your shoulders
Bend your elbows 90° but keep your wrists straight with your palms in
Adjust your neck strap and radio balance so that the radio hangs level while resting against your stomach at a comfortable position between your hands

I like to have my pinky fingers under the radio and index fingers over of course with the top switches between my middle and ring fingers so I can flip the top switches up with my ring fingers and down with my middle fingers and flip the face switches back with my middle fingers and forward with my index fingers

Pinch

I think I have a better feel on the stick movement using "Pinch"

I do both with no problem, most the time I'm thumbing though. As I'll take off in the front yard and walk to the back to fly and then walk back to the front to land, just a lot easier with the thumbs an no neck strap.

I get the impression that the Pinch Grip is the most popular method, I always hear Dumb Thumbed, but never hear Dumb pinched !! LOL

Thumb for me. My right index finger is not working too well since the main blade struck it....cannot get it fully bend .

Hope it gets better in a few weeks time.

I must be weird because I am a thumbs pilot. I tried the pinch method but just couldn't get comfortable with it.

A good example of a thumb flier and a pinch flier. Fly with whatever you feel comfortable with.

Well if you can choose early enough I believe you're better off pinching - I hear of lots of thumbers complaining and wishing they were pinchers and always looking for those non-existent stick ends that their thumbs won't walk off of but I never hear of any pinchers complaining and wishing they were thumbers

My fingers and hands aren't flexable to fly pinch, so I use thumbs and it works for me. I tried to fly pinch on the sim, and my hands could not do it for long. The trade off I get for strength.
