Does anyone make metal blades 700 mm and up ? I heard or read somewhere that AMA does not approve metal blades. If that's true, why not ? Seems CF can be very sharp and dangerous and they fly apart on crashing. Metal blades would bend but not disintegrate. Seems asymmetrical blades in metal would be easier to make. Maybe to flexible ??

They would be just as dangerous as CF.

AMA

From the AMA guide at http://www.modelaircraft.org/PDF-files/105.pdf

7. I will not operate model aircraft with metal-blade propellers or with gaseous boosts (other than air), nor will I operate model aircraft with fuels containing tetranitromethane or hydrazine.

So the answer is no, they do not allow metal blades nor a sweet nitrous oxide booster system!

Many CF blades have a safety wire in them that prevents them from completely disintegrating.

M-Blades

There is a German manufacturer (M-Blades) who makes aluminium blades.
You can buy the blades directly from his shop (www.m-blades.com)or http://cgi.ebay.de/M-Blades-Alu-Rot...QQcmdZViewItem.

I used to have a pair of metal tail blades. They were nice, but to be honest, I could not see any advantages vs CF blades. Even the price is quite high.
Regarding metal main blades there are a couple of controverse discussions somewhere on the net. I think some people use them on scale helis but in general there are very few pilots who use those.
Anyway, they are pretty much expensive and likely much more dangerous than CF or wood blades.

Thanks guys, I was just curious why I had never seen or heard of metal blades. You have answered my question.

There is no evidence

that aluminum blades are more dangerous...

in fact, there is considerable evidence to the contrary.

...there is an earlier post related to the use of metal blades, which I initiated. There were several replies advising that they are not permitted for use under the AMA or BMFA rules.

However, as regarding their ability to cause greater damage than CF or GRP blades on contact with solid objects (humans), I believe there are no hard statistics available - it is perceived, more than likely incorrectly, that they would cause more damage as a rotating metal blade is likened to a more sinister object, designed to inflict damge, such a a knife or sword....

..I do remember one reply to the post, from an Australian Pilot, who had seen both CF/GRP blades & Metal baldes catistrophically fail in operation. I think he remarked the CF/GRP baldes splintered & broke up , whilst the metal blades bent & buckled, but remained intact, wrapping themselves around the head.

In my own experience, a shard of broken CF or GRP can be just as sharp than metal kitchen knife.

I think the ban by the AMA & BMFA is more down to psychological expectations of possible damage to flesh, rather than actual recorded injuries....a metal blade just seems to be more dangerous I think ?

If I can find the original post again, I'll post a link to it
