The standard rods could be replaced with UNC studding if it can be located. With my latest setup I completely changed rods and nuts to all metric for the Finer Edge system, but would only suggest that if you are a real glutton for punishment.

I did the same for my Finer Edge setup. The stock Dynatron rods with integrated nuts were a little too short so I ordered some 10-24 rod and couplers and cut to the correct length and used red Loctite to fasten the couplers to the rods. It worked great, but in the end I wonder if it was really necessary. It may have worked with the standard rods, but the extra length did provide some more threads on the nuts.

If you have a moment at some stage will you quickly explain how you went about swapping for metric

In view of all the time I was wasting I didn't bother keeping any detailed notes but briefly:

2 x 5mm MS rods screwcut both ends. Threads in front housing re-tapped to M5. New adaptor nuts made M5 (for the rear end). New M5 stainless acorn nuts for the front end. M5 allen screws to fix Finer Edge item to the adaptor nuts.

If anyone else is balmy enough to attempt the metric conversion I can measure the rods etc...but it is not a recommended route.

If you have easy access to the UNC studding (like our US friends) that would be the best option.

Your right, sounds a bit excessive.
It is possible I might be able to get some UNC studding. Might try that first.
Is it easy enough to dismantle and put back together? The last starter I had was a nightmare to get the brushes back in. Gave up in the end!

Peefor, just been looking at your gallery.
You obviously have too much time on your hands!

You could be right.

If you assemble the starter from the back-end first , it's easy. Carefully lift the carbon brushes upwards in their holders. Move the little springs from the end to the side to wedge the brushes in the 'out' position..

Insert the armature only into the backplate, then release the brushes. The next bit is the tricky bit. You have to place the white body of the starter (with the magnets in), over the armature. In the blink of an eye the magnets will pull the armature out of the backplate and into the body. If you allow this to happen the brushes pop out.

When you have done a few, it gets easier. It's also more difficult to describe than to do. Also swearing has an inversly proportional effect to the degree of difficulty.

Stick the front plate on and you're nearly there. The rods also gets attracted to the magnets and can be perplexing to get them the enter the tapped hole in the front plate.

I use a long piece of piano wire or whatever is to hand, pushed through from the front end, exiting the rear holes. Place the end of the threaded rod onto the long piece, and push through from the rear. Keep the two pieces firmly pushed together end-to-end, easing the long piece out through the front. You should end up with the threaded rod then engaging with the inside of the tapped hole in the front plate.

Again it's far easier to do than describe.
