e-HeliDirect HDX 300-600 > HDX500 Gyro problem

I have an HDX 500 and am using a Futaba 401 Gyro with the 9254 servo. I am also using the 70 mm tail blades. The Gyro is set to the DS on position, delay is set to zero. I am using Channel 5 on the receiver with the landing gear switch on the transmitter to switch from heading hold to standard; for heading hold the travel is set to 100%, non-heading hold is set to 40%. The travel limit was set on the 401 in the nonheading hold position, adjusting the linkage so that I get full travel of the tail rotor blades. I connect the battery and wait for the Gyro to initialize in the heading hold position. If I am hovering and try to climb out quickly, the nose will rotate to the left, fairly severely. If I am simply hovering, the Gyro will hold great. I have another 401 Gyro on a Miniature Aircraft Excel and a CSM 420e on a TRex and have not had any problems on these, so I am not totally unfamiliar with the setup of gyros. Does anyone have any recommendations?

before fly with the head holding you must set the mechanic lenght of the rod / tail blade in normal, no holdind.
Just hovering careffuly and adjust the lenght, The hely must stay in position.
Than after switch off, set in the tx the holding and try again.

If you get the same issue add more gain

gyro problem

Hi Luca. I tried that and it didn't help. With the 401 Gyro, if I reset the tail rotor control rod to the proper length with the servo arm at 90° to the tail rotor control rod, (in the hover position, normal mode) I will have to reset the travel limit on the Gyro. This means that it will have to be reset to the lesser end of the travel (which would be a left input command) because the 401 does not have separate travel limits for right and left. I did go ahead and try this but I still have the same problem with the helicopter nose going to the left on rapid climb out. The gain is at 100- I have gone as high as 120 but still have the problem. Do you think I should go with larger tail rotor blades? What gyro/servo combo are you using?

Hi
I thinks that some is strange.
The gain at 100% and you want go at 120%???
The gyro gain in the tx arrive at 100% max and personally i never pas 70%!!
To many thinks can cause your issue
servo speed
servo set
gyro set
head speed
tail blade size
tail sliding set
tx setting
is very hard to me help by forum. I need to see the setting and the hely to understand.....
I am sorry but I advise you to find some friend near you that can check and set the issue for you.
To see my 500 setting go read my tread in the hdx 500 verdict, actually I changed the tail blade I use the 68mm plastic from robbe (easy to get in europe) but other hdx guy in the thread can suggest the best product in usa, like gyro I use logictec 6100 with his servo, but I buy few day ago the jr770 with his servo, faster in piro rating.
401 is a good gyro to used with a 9254 can be ok, but like everithing in the heli must be checked in the assembly.
I used 401+ 9254 with satisfation in many hely 450 600 and rappy 50, the limit of 401 is in backword inverted manouver and in the piro rating, but I know very good 3d pilot that still use it.
I am so sorry that I cannot help you, and to finish I don't thinks that the issue is in the hely or in the gyro but you need look in the assembly like told you in the biggin.
Sorry again and I wish you will fix it soon.

BigKid,

You are not the only one with tail holding problems. HDX500 tail has insufficient authority to hold in fast climbouts. And this is tail design problem. I have seen this reported for both SE and SA versions. See rcg forums.
I have read Helidirect is going to release tail pulley upgrade from 14T to 13T. This should solve the problem as it would increase tail RPM.
70mm tail blades do not solve the problem themselves.
BigKid, do you have SA or SE version?
With SA people are considering two workarounds. One of whose is already proven to be working. You can increase compensating tail pitch range by producing shorter tail pitch push rods. However this is difficult to make at home.
Another discussed option was to use longer tail rotor shaft. I have not seen it done yet.

Some people are reporting they have good success with stock tail rotor design. However I do not believe that. Either they are using small collective range (like up to +-9 degrees) either they are not telling everything.
I would like Helidirect to address tail problems and cyclic response problems ASAP. Otherwise we will be forced to call this heli trainer/sport heli. No way 3D.

BTW, my setup is HDX500SA, 850kv GAUI motor, 5S, 18T pinion, gy401+9254.
