They can do well for AMA Class 1 or 2. Anything beyond that requires faster forward flight for making nice big vertical rolling maneuvers, something that heavier gassers have a hard time with.

Their higher disk loading can be advantageous in the hovering manuevers, actually. They also don't smoke like the Nitros, so judges may give you some brownie points. However, on the flip side to that, they are usually noisier.

FAI

Thanks Erich

I have been involved with scale and basic training for the last 10 years or so, therefore my awareness of what works in other areas is somewhat limited.

The Mulberry club has a quite a few members that have and interest in FAI,Rolondo and Nob have indicated they will help us get off to a good start.

The helicopters that the membership has is of course varied, from Shuttles to the large Vario Benzin, so your input as to the right machine will be much appreciated.

The club has copied and made available to its members the AMA & FAI criteria.

Gassers

Gassers have been used in the AMA classes at the US Nationals for many years, winning in Class 1 and finishing well in Classes 2 and 3. I remember Carey Shurley finishing 3rd in Class 3 a few years ago and the model flew very well. I cannot ever remember a gasser in F3C as they tend to be pretty heavy and don't run particularly smoothly so they don't always present well to FAI judges. They have enough power to do the maneuvers but are pretty easily out-shown but glow or electric models.

Wow Doug, that's great news regarding the club. Let the word out that my contest will be held March 7-9 2008. The contest starts on Saturday with Friday a practice day.

The usual gang of big dawgs will be there, including ole Gordie here, Wayne Mann, Dwight Shilling, and Cliff Hiatt. Maybe someday Curtis will pop in, who knows

Cheers,
Erich

Actually, that's not as much of a problem as it used to be. In the 2005 season, I flew a Bergen Intrepid Gas EB with a stock G26 and the then-current Century gasser pipe (V.2), and it wasn't that bad. It was a little louder than my 90, sure, but it was way quieter than the stock black can mufflers that Zenoah ships with the engines. I hear the 3rd generation gas pipes are even quieter, but I've not seen/heard one for myself.

Even though I went back to niro for a number of reasons, I still daydream sometimes about how a full Hanson-modded G26 would do in a heli that was massaged for lighter weight. I dont' anticipate experimenting any time soon, though.

Y'know what I do wonder about sometimes, though, is the Webra 91-P5 gas engine. Webra claims it's rated for 3PS, and I believe it uses standard 90-size nitro mounting dimensions. It'd make for an interesting project for someone with the resources.

There were reports that the Webra overheats badly. Haven't heard much recently, though.

Webra

There was alot of interest in the P5 by the scale guys, however heating was a reported problem, they tell me that in a fuselage it was inpossible.

My Predator has a Century V3 muffler and 710 Rotor Tech blades, at 1450 headspeed it is quiet and very stable.

I have also had the CSM flybarless system on it with the stock head and no flybar, with nice results.

The newer gassers like Century Predator Gasser is out of the box, only slightly heavier than many other FAI ships.

It is possible to shave of some weight with li-po, smaller tank (who needs 30 mins of flying), removable starter and carbon landing gear. The ready flight weight should be around 5,4kg without fuel and 5,7 with fuel for 20 mins flying.

It would be equal to an nitro ship of 5,1 kg without fuel. A modded 231 motor has around 4.5Hp.

A K&S gas muffler is slightly lauder than an Hatori Nitro muffler, but within the noice limit of F3C.

With and modded motor, carefully dailed in fan and low level of oil (Amsoil 50:1) is should the vibrations be very close to a nitro.

Thw Webra path is probably not a good way to go. The avalible mufflers is way to noicy for F3C.
