Anybody know why the MX 450 is going so cheap?I got one from tower hobbies for $139 and that's allot of bling. It's not set up yet but it looks good.Oh how do they 3D anybody have one?

3d

In my experience the MX450 was slow rolling and flipping. I bought a T-rex fly bar some light weight T-rex paddles and improved it quite a bit. I'm no 3d flyer though. I can do backwards flips, rolls either way and Im getting pretty good at hovering inverted.I bet someone good at 3d could make the MX-450 look like a 3d machine.

hi
i just got one a week ago for $149.95 at the local hobby shop , it is a great deal for the dough , i'm just a sport flier so i don't really mind if it's not the hottest 3D heli on the market , got it setup and flying and i am as happy as a clam , dana

so cheap

I thought at first the low price ment close out. Not sure now. Maybe Heli-Max is trying to become better known. Maybe they plan on making there profit from parts?? Like when you buy a cheap printer for 39 bucks and the refills cost as much as the printer.

hi SLC
yes , i agree , they are giving it away , in hopes to sell parts later , at $150 you can pretty much buy a second for a crash kit
, here are a few pictures of mine , it's pretty much the stock setup , except for the battery holder , AUW with battery 604 grams

Love the battery tray. I had plans to make one similar to yours but haven't got around to it. I saw another custom battery tray here on RR I liked. The guy took the Heli-Max gyro mount and screwed a piece of carbon fiber to the gyro mount fastened it to the frame where yours is mounted.

hi SLC
thanks , i had a 4" piece of paint stick i was using for the first couple of days , to be sure i had the CG right , and i saw a post over at RCgroups where someone was using a TREX tray , so i wanted something nicer than paint stick and cheaper than a trex tray , i'm going to pop it off and use an electricians xmastree bit to drill some progressive diameter holes along the sides and down the top , i am thinking i can get it down to about 10 grams or less , i think half the fun with helis is working with the mechanics , dana

hi
just got back up from the basement , here's a photo

this last photo shows how it's attached , i shortened the two short standoffs in the lower mount to make room for the sheetmetal

Nice setup.Looks like you went with the 450th motor too. I just bought one along with a 35amp ESC and love it. It's a stout little motor for the money.

hi
yes , the JGF 450TH is a great little motor , i am hearing that running this setup (450TH + CC P-35 ) on 4 cell lipo is the way to go , a 4 cell 1500mah 15C is supose to have the same flight time as a 3 cell 2000mah 20C and run cooler with a bit better response , i haven't tried it yet but i am thinking i may have to

battery tray

That tray is twice as nice with the hole's , very profesional looking.
Never heard the term Christmas tree bit, had to think about that for a sec. In my drill case on my truck I have a few small pilot hole bits and xmastree bit (uni-bit) , there the best thing since sliced bread.

hi SLC
thanks , yes a uni-bit is the correct name , i worked at a shop where they were called x-mas tree bits and it ended up sticking , they are the best for sheet metal , a bit spendy but worth every cent

i used aircraft shears to cut a 4 X 5 inch piece of .050" alloy sheet and used a rawhide mallet to form it over the end of a piece of .75" alloy plate , roughly a 1.125 X .75 channel , 5" in length , then i snipped the sides down to form the taper and gave it that brushed chrome look with a bench sander ( before sanding it looked pretty rough ) , took a couple of days of dragging heals and himming and hawing before i finally knucked down and went into the basement to bang it out , the fabrication is all pretty low tech , but for a one-off it looks fine

i just got expansions pack 4 for G3.5 and it has the heli-max MX450 , i have been tweeking the syms MX to see how close i can get it to fly like my MX , and i can tell you they had it way hotter than mine was out of the box

skills

I know it took alot of skill to make the tray and drill the holes. I'm a electrician (IBEW local 934) . I always look at the work other trades do on the jobs I work and ask how they do certian things fileing it away because someday I may need to use that info, and if not you can never be to informed.
Im curious how you drilled the holes and kept the xmastree bit from binding and bending/warping the thin metal.

hi SLC
i am the same way , allways looking at things and asking how it's done , the sheet was formed over a 3/4" alloy plate , so when i drilled it i slid it over a 3/4" scrap of wood , and used my drill press , having the uni-drill in a hand drill would be pretty dicey , you will like this photo of the wood block i keep on my drill press

wood block

I can even see where you did the drilling of the battery tray on the wood block. Thanks for taking the time to post the pic Copperclad.
