And I used the ProgCard to get the settings I want. Now that I have it set, When I crack the throttle, It goes all the way to wide open throttle and that is the only setting it gives me. Does anyone know how I fix this?

Lou,

Hard to say, but it sounds like your PowerJazz is still in APM mode. In apm mode the pj will take the first throttle setting as 100%. So, if you startup at 65%, your other idle-up settings will need to be a lot lower to get a lower than 100% gov'd hs.

If you have tried 'fixed' mode on the prog card, setting hi/lo throttle points this should fix this problem. I found I had to redo this a few times to get this to work properly though. This is a bit of a pain to do since you need to power upeverything, incl your rx,and bring a lead down from it from the throttle channel to the bat plug of the prog card and also plug the esc into the esc plug of the prog card as well. I needed to make a 2-ended lead with servo plug ends to do this.

Once you do this you should be able to hone onto a idle-up hs that suits you. Maybe start with something like 60% Idle-up 1 and 70% idle-up 2, tack them, and go from there.

One thing to keep in mind is that the jazz escs use initial pack voltages to set gov'd hs's so if you have a number of different ages/makes of flight packs, do not expect them to give exactly the same headspeed at a given throttle setting, although they should be close on 10-12s. On 15s, I get +100-150 rpm hs differences. Also, avoid unconnecting/reconnecting the esc battery lead after your initial spoolup since it will then recalculate the initial voltages based on lower pack voltages.

Good luck and welcome to the world of crummy Kontronik instruction manuals! Hang in there, it will be worth it in the end.

Cheers,

Tom C

I flew the PJ for the first time today. I am still having the issue of the heli only has one speed and that is WOT. I put a tach on it and it sings at 1920.

I have checked and I am in fixed pitch and I have set hi/low stick. I guess I will try it again and see what happens. I assume that all this needs to be done in normal mode with a linear 0-50-100 throttle curve?

Lou,

The PZ esc really wants/needs to be operated in govenor mode, not non-gov mode.

You should have a good understanding of the differences between non-gov and gov mode throtle curves to begin with.

Do a few search's on this and other forums to see how to set the PJazz up. If you cannot, I'm sure someone will walk you through it (incl me).

Cheers,
Tom C

Lou 1920 sounds about right ... hehe. It sounds like maybe you are you trying to program the PJ like we used to with the old Smile and Beat ESC's. If so, the PJ is very different.

I attached some pictures and info on how I set up my PJ for fixed stick positions here:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...t=734635&page=9

Look at page 9 (towards the end) and page 10 of the thread.

Like Tom mentioned earlier, you have to make a male-to-male servo extension to be able to link the receiver to the ProgCard. I have some pictures in that thread.

Once you get the receiver in the loop, you can program in the following parameters using a 0-50-100 throttle curve:
> RPM control: On, you can now run flat throttle curves.
> Stick Positions: Fixed
> Set motor off position: With throttle stick at the bottom, press and hold the ProgCard button.
> Set Full gas position: With throttle stick at top, press and hold the ProgCard button.
> Set brake position: Not needed so I just skipped this one.

This worked for me and some of the other Ion-X2 fliers. I can easily adjust my governed headspeed by changing the throttle percentage. Sorry if you already knew or had tried any of this. It's just that programming the PJ can be a little tricky since the instructions suck.

Good luck and let us know if you still have problems.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the guys that contributed to this thread. I got a PJ this week, and using the info in this thread, the programing of the unit with the program card went off without a hitch.
