Just finshed charging this battery and dropped it (it slipped out of my hand and fell two inchs onto a desk).

Obviously this was enough to split the skin on one of the cells as a cloud of gas with blown out in my face, i realised what was happening and on instinct decided that it needed to be out the house no matter what, so I grabbed it, ran out the house and threw it in the garden.

Here's a couple of photos for you just to see what happens, btw it hurts quite a bit, it happened 20mins ago, and i'm sat here in a cloud of smoke typing this.

Wow ! what kind of pack was that ? U must have droped it right on the short bars for the connections to the soder tabs and shorted it out. it doesnt take long. If you ever saw the lipo sack in action they shorted the pack and seconds later it was on fire. Very luck to get away this easy, consider urself very lucky. get a tool box and use the window next time

It was an Align 11.1v 22c 2100mAh Lipo, but i'm definitely going to invest in a lipo sack. Only problem is that i'm paranoid about the other one being in the house.

But yes I do consider myself lucky, i must have held the pack for at least 45sec, i also fell down the stairs and kept hold of it, it scared me to death but it's taught me a lesson and i've come out of it in one piece.

I bet that does hurt..

Sorry for your burn man, I am sure that stings pretty bad and will probably be worse tomorrow (today?).

Thanks for sharing though, keeps this stuff fresh. I haven't had any problems with my packs but do charge right by a window with a hole in a screen and wouldn't hesitate to toss them out with a quickness.

I don't use a sack or toolbox because I like to be able to keep an eye on them while they charge. Probably ought to start though...

Ummm,
I hate to be the one to mention this... and it being a fair while since this happened, but the smoke these things give off is very very very very bad for you :S

I'm sure you'll pull through though

I remember when we blew up lipo's last summer...
The fresh ones were mighty vicious but alas the slightly older ones with about 30,000 cycles that just wernt worth using anymore... lol.
we'll i'll jst say we got a 2100mah 11.1v kokam up to around 19volts before it reptured

Only turned out to be a little smoke bomb though.

Saying that, we burnt a Picco Z and boy did that tiney little battery go up somewhat heh.

Get another can of Strongbow... for medicinal purposes only .

The 2 cell 7.4V packs I have for my Sabre have survived falls from waist height (worktop) to the floor before now FWIW...

Tach.

The only thing I can think of is that i've weakened it in a previous crash (although there was no visible damage to the battery), and it's landed on a corner or something.

Paranoid myself regarding my LiPo batteries in my Condo Unit. Lipo sacks are a good choice or ammo cans. I place mine in Pyrex bowls, have 2 bowls stacked with a lid in the middle also, use pyrex on a fire retardant ceiling tile while charging. When not home I put them in the oven for extra peace of mind.

I'd hate to be the one that burned down my unit in the condo....

Thankfully since deciding that i might as well just get on with it I charged my remaining lipo (gotta wait until pay day for some more).

Although i've charged them loads of times i think it was the longest charge of my life, sat there watching it anmd thankfully nothing happened

To all those that don't treat Lipo's very carefully, i was very careful with mine, a slight slip and it was nearly all over, the only thing that saved the day was grabbing the exploding lipo and running outside and even then it was sheer luck, literally 45secs from starting to burn to it being out.

I never believed the storys about these batterys (the youtube video is a bit worrying, but it's a lot worse 1ft away from you), but they are very scary when they burn, be carefull......

They were charged in a pyrex bowl, unfortunately i didn't put the lid on it, so the sparks etc. wnt quite a way.

From now on i will be charging them between a couple of housebricks (of the hollowed out design), so at least the fire/flame will be contained, then i'll just have to deal with the smoke.
