Any one have a helicopter fly away on them before???????

I was about five feet off the ground,
heli started spinning,
regained control, when,
radio or receiver went (not sure yet).

The heli had a degree of pitch above hover,
starting pirouetting,
climbed slowly with fuel to last for 4-5 min left.

All I could do was watch with awe,
"was this really happening to me".

So after it climbed, ran out of gas, it fell and fell and fell.

What a way to end my Day.

Any comments?????????

A good day????......... is not crashing :)

dang

sry to hear that....get a spektrum dx7 or the futaba fasst system or something....dx7 spektrum is the best for me and i never ever had that problem...all you can do wrong with it is failer with heli...you crashing it to the ground yourself..

yea i love my dx7... never had any problems. most of the problems with spektrum are user faults. i.e low rx voltage

fly, fly, fly away

I was using a Futaba 7chp, and 138dp

I think the problem was the battery wire to the receiver came out, and therefore made the heli dead in the air.
All the servos remained at the same angle and the tail spun around.
Those symptoms make me think that somehow the wire came out.

Any thoughts on what happened?
Any other ideas?
Has this happened to any else?

PS- Has anybody said to themselves, like I did, after something like this happens,
"Well, that's it, I'm selling everything and getting out of the
hobby!"

A good day????......... is not crashing :)

I would think that there would be enough force from the rotor to push the swash down to 0deg. pitch, there should not be that much holding power when the power is out.

I use these to keep my conections together http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bi...?&I=LXDT86&P=ML they just makes me feel better.

I would guess that would be some kind of lock out.

Use and set your fail safe mode..It will prevent flw aways..We have 2 guys at our field lost heli's from 2 reasons...
1. Raptor 50 RX pack was not fully charge..Lost power while up in the air. Heli pirouetting at least 50-100 ft up in the air..RX pack was a nimh batt. pack which most people dont use because they says once its drain, its drained...Heli flew over so many high trees and is somewhere in the woods never found up to now...
2. Trex 600N Brand new with all new equiptment..while at flight, JR crystal flew out of the reciever. Heli pirouetting at 20 ft. off the ground and ended up in a thorne infested tree. Heli was recovered with minor damages.

well the good thing is when a nimh pack is drained its drained but it doesn't burst into flames like a lipo... id rather have my heli fall to the ground than fall to the ground on fire...

Did you recover the heli ?

You dont mention if you got the bird back ?

I have seen a model do that, caused by a battery lead shorting. If that happens none of the comments about using Spektrum or setting fail safe are relevant.

When the Heli fell (Was'nt mine) the wiring loom was a melted mess.

Sounds like dead or disconnected battery to me. Isnt the gyro the normally the first thing to go on low voltage considering the first thing to happen was the tail spinning?

right, because failsafe modes are the most useful thing when the rx batt leads are out.

First instinct should have been to hit T-hold when there was a problem, so that moment when you had a brief second of regained control hopefully it would have sent the motor to idle right away.

Not a heli, but many years ago a guy at our field hand lauched a glow powered glider without turning the reciever on. That thing slowly circled and gained altitude for 10 minutes. We jumped in a car and followed it for over and hour and a half before it made a perfect landing in a hay field 10 miles away.

A friend on a nearby island, had his heli fly away a couple of years ago.

As a suggestion I would make is to always do your PreFlight; check wire connections; Radio range check; etc.

When my antenna wire disconnected in flight I lost control and my heli didn't fly away but crashed harder than I have ever seen someone crash, needless to say it was good for the garbage.

I wish I could fly 24/7
