This group has been gathering and getting together since the fall of 2006. One can find more info about our loose group by reading the "Rotorhead" file on the TRAMPS webpage at WWW.TRAVERSEMODELPILOTS.COM. We fly at various clubs and private sites in the northwestern half of the lower peninsula. We welcome folks that are serious about learning to fly R/C electric and nitro helicopters. We maintain a Excel database of pilots that will be mailed to you should you join our group.

Recent and Past Postings About Us

Saturday Nov 3rd. Seven of us gathered at Chris Zolen's in Kalkaska, fired up the bonfire, put on the coffee pot, popped open the beer locker. Myself with Tiger 50 and my son's Caliber 30, Chris with his Raptor 90, Trex 450, Steve & Steve with their nice Raptor Titan, and Hawk Pro, Tony & Jerry Lawhead with his very nice Raptor 50 and Trex 600N, we got down to warming-up and flying in the cool grey skies.
Tony is really coming on fast, both the Steve's are improving each outing, I had the cheap Tiger 50 with an OS.46, stock servos and wood blades doing the best it could. We did have a setup crash with the Caliber 30 but it will be ready for our Thanksgiving FREEZE-FLY when Alex comes home from Michigan Tech for vacation. Chris had a wild ride with his Raptor 90 when the gyro sensor on his 611 came unstuck and was flying around in the breeze. Throw away those Futaba sticky pads and use either CSM mounting tape or ZEAL pads and most important use a velcro retaining strap just in case the sticky pad comes loose. Cold weather really makes that stuff lose it's stick. Lars Schwab showed up with his rebuilt Raptor 30 and Raptor Titan and flew the heck out of his machines. His rebuilt OS.37 was making big power and his helis flew great. After a few hours of flying, pizzas arrived and we chowed down and caught up on the football scores. Pizza gone, back to the flying and fire. As soon as the darkness fell we sat around the fire to swap stories and everyone slowly drifted off to home. Great Day. Looking forward to doing it again on November 23, FREEZE FLY at Chris's day after Thanks giving, see post below.

POST TO NW MICHIGAN HELICOPTER PILOTS, NOV 3, 2007 EARLY MORNING.
Dear Heli Diary,
Time to recount the past flying season.
April= Toledo Weak Signals Show, good show again, bought fuel, and saw lots of new heli stuff. Prep Tiger 50 with Chris Z for trainer heli, he hits tree, damn.
May= Beginners round-up, clear but cold, lots of new and old friends, season kicked-off in style. Crashed one Raptor 50, damn.
June= Hirobo Cup in Toledo, good time had by those attending, USCG guys and friends make road-trip. Bought pop-up camper for IRCHA, smart.
June=TRAMPS air show, best show in a while, plankers and rotorheads play well, Nick comes out of the darkness and discovers helis. Wednesday night flying gets going, success, helis are here to stay.
July=Helis flying everywhere, Luzerne/Ausable air show goes well, many helis and planks playing together, first night flights with TREX 450, one TREX in the trees. damn. Raptor 50 back, try to stretch auto over a net, tip over, damn.
August= IRCHA, what can I say, best time ever with helis, heli friends, died and went to heaven, although so hot, felt like hell. 18 NWMICH guys, 25 total with family, IRCHA MONEY, everybody gets new toys, spend IRCHA money, (different color than normal money), more power for everybody, rum balls, slime aid, night fly TREX 450 with Chris Z, CZ finds orange pilot cone, damn.
September= Heli mob shows up at Tustin and helis outnumber planks, great day, Nick and Chris fly way beyond the edge, 3 close calls. Scalers looking good. Heli-deer camp in the woods, great time, good food, good drink, good flying, night flying, spud guns, fireworks, and THE BEST MID-AIR
of the year. Damn. Raptor 50 back, ripping and having fun, then no tail and lawn dart time. damn. Tramps Wednesday night, night fly session, Tiger 50 goes piro nuts at end of flight and into the ground, damn.
October= Everyone still has the summertime fever and heli flying at CZ, TRAMPS, wherever. TREX 450 throws a blade after a hard landing, damn.

So, now it is November. TO DO LIST. Call Leelanau Sands Casino, arrange for indoor flying schedule for this winter. Details to follow.
Get helis repaired, buy ingredients for "THE BUSIEST SHOPPING DAY OF THE YEAR." Friday,November 23, 2007, Zolen's Heli Haven, Kalkaska

That's right, day after Thanksgiving, "THE BUSIEST SHOPPING DAY OF THE YEAR", mark your calendar, give the wife and kids a few $20's and tell them you won't be around. Why you ask? Because you have put away the summer junk, winterized the vehicles, drained the pool, covered the boat, bought the back-to-school crap, and already shot your buck for the season, so just like last year, you are cashing in what little hubby-points you have remaining to go spend the day standing next to a big bon-fire at Chris Zolen's, flying whatever helis you have left, drinking some frosty beverages, telling tall tales, while wearing a plaid shirt and blaze orange flap hat in the woods and pissing on trees. Again for you calendar-challenged types, day after Thanksgiving, FRIDAY, you are invited to come on out for our end of season spectacular, Freeze-Fly. Dave Johnson will be preparing a luscious venison stew and I will tantalize your taste-buds with 2-gallons of my Chili. Real food and drink for real Turkeys, crazy enough to come on out in the cold to fly their helis. The workshop and Tiki Room will be heated for those needing a little thawing out.
We are talking 3-weeks from yesterday, so charge something, fix something, build something and come on out for a day of flying, lying, laughing and freezing. GET OVER IT, you could be at the mall with the wife and kids and the rest of America.

In closing, remember tis the season to start leaving the Tower Talks, Heliproz rags, RC Heli mags with your secret desires circled and lying around the house or pages torn out and clipped to the fridge with reminder remarks to yourself to tell a friend( Yeah Right) so the wife and others can find them easily. Nothing like waking up with a box about 12"x12"x 30" wrapped under the tree or a 2.4ghz module and receiver sticking out of Dad's Xmas stocking. Hubby points are all spent so now you have to get right down to the subtle hints by leaving your heli tracks around the house, magazine folded open in the head, on top of the washer, spread fan like on the coffee table with all the ladies magazines.

Until next time, off to the garage to load up to go fly this morning, see ya soon, you know where. Heli On Wayne, Heli On Garth. " Mike's World, Mike's world, Mike's World", Hum the tune you know it.

September 21-22-23 Heli Deer Camp at Zolen's Heli Haven, Kalkaska ( Home of the spud gun, ring of fire, and the famous "Brown Thumb".

The hardy and heli-crazy started arriving Friday afternoon at with pop-up campers, tents, motor homes. The field was enlarged, trees cleared and cones and signs were ready. The early arrivals, Steve and Stephen Stedronski, myself, Steve Balyo, Lars Schwab were busy fixing, tuning and flying helis while stoking the bonfire. Chris Zolen's family let us invade there estate and later Lars made a run to Arby's for a big bag of sandwiches for supper to go with all the sodas and adult beverages. The new potato canon's were broken out and many a potatoes met it's end being shot high into the sky. The canons were so popular that an extra one will be built this year for our IRCHA friends, the S.W.A.R.M. heli guys from the Milwaukee Area. The early arrival guys kept the night fires burning with a few night heli flights. We all turned in around 1 AM, a warm night, nearly full moon. We were in our version of heaven. The night cooled off and we awoke to some dew and bright sunshine. The morning fire was rekindled and a big pot of coffee was brewed. The weekend's fun and games were about to start as pilots and helis began to arrive, EZ-up tents started popping up as vehicles were unloaded. Saturday arrivals included, Steve Fink, from Onekama, the Marion/Cadillac gang of Troy Raymond, Dave Wobbers, Brad Matznick, Tony Lawhead and wife, and Jerry Lawhead,Dave Johnson,Coast Guard Steve Horacek, Gary Meese and son from Chase, Rich Smith & Bill Suhy, Mark Bonofiglio and wife and later in the day Nick Harwood, and Steve Briggs and father. Lots of helicopters, fish heads, scalers and Troy Raymond brought his big 90 size photo helicopter. Troy has this big Stinger 90 with a TV camera for stills and real time video down link. Troy put this heli high above the field, engaged the FMA autopilot and Dave Wobbers operated the under slung camera transmitting pictures to a TV in the clubhouse for all of us to watch. Check the pictures on the TRAVERSEMODELPILOTS.COM page. There are some cool pictures of Nick's Excel Fury zooming around in frame for the camera. Lunch time came and I assume the duties of burger and brat cook on Chris's really nice gas grill, while Mark Bonofiglio and wife set-up the deep fryer to make some really good battered onion rings and Dave Johnson did the baked bean cooking on my camper stove. Everyone did a great job of bringing a little of this and that for lunch and dinner. For dinner the Dave prepared more baked beans, and Jerry Lawhead made the best homemade potato salad, and a very tasty taco salad was added, while Mark and wife cooked up some deep fried turkey's for the main course. Chips and homemade cookies were also part of the fare. We didn't go hungry all day.

The flying was great with Lars flying his brand spanking new TITAN 50, and everything from 90's to TREX 450's, GPH 346, Fury 90, Tiger 50, Raptor 50's, Evo 50's Venture 30's and a pair of nice new TREX 600 nitro's along with scale Jet Rangers, Hughes 500 helicopters took to the air. On a sad note we did have a spectacular mid air with two full bling Titan 50 helis. Steve Stedronski and Brad Matznick put new meaning into the concept of thinking and flying outside the box. The both smacked spindle to spindle with their beautiful Titans, see picture, they are the guys holding up their helis like they just caught some big Co ho Salmon. As the sun set Chris broke out the professional fireworks and night helis were prepared for the evening entertainment along with more spud gun antics. The gallon of cider was opened for those wishing to feel the fall season as the sun was setting and leaves were turning color. The spider was enhanced as necessary by our friend Capt. Morgan. The night fliers included, Chris Zolen, Steve Balyo, Lars Schwab, and myself. Steve Balyo was generous enough to let Steve Horacek have a try at night flying. Nick Harwood gave Steve's night heli a thorough test and put it through it's paces, up until the time he forgot that a 401 doesn't work as well as a 611 and the tail blew out on a maneuver and he got up and down confuse all the way to the ground. Ouch, but the Evo will fly again. Lars flew the heck out of his hot Raptor 30 night bird and I cruised around with my Tiger 50 and TREX 450 night birds. Chris finished up the evenings entertainment with a professional fireworks cake. The visitors headed home and the campers closed in on the bonfire to relax, tell tall tales and stories. A pair of mid-night pizzas was ordered and the revelry continued until 2:45 AM with spud guns, fire crackers, and spur of the moment night flights when the music was right or the hair on your A challenge was issued. The night was cooler and we awoke at 7 AM for warmth around the fire, coffee laced with some Bailey's, and arrivals for Sundays flying. The morning wake up call was with Nick Harwood getting airborne at 7 AM. Coast Guard Rich showed up early with his helis and the debut of one our friend's (Bill Oliver) long overdue helicopter's, a Robinson 22 with Excel mechanics and an OS 91 four stroke motor. Rich did a great job and the heli looks so good flying around low and slow with that rich engine sound. Everyone got a chance to fly this sweet heli. Later in the morning we even had a flight session with Rich flying the Robinson 22, Steve Balyo flying his Century 30 Jet Ranger, and Chris flying my Kyosho 60 Jet Ranger all hovering together while I filmed them flying together.

What a fun two days. And a most important note, everyone of our group of initial heli pilots have upgraded their helis, radios, engines, and EVERYONE is out of the hover and doing forward flight and much more. In fact this past Wednesday, Chief Mark, flying nice forward flight did a Babe Ruth and called the shot, he told us he was going to loop before the end of the day, and he did, he is tearing up the sky now.

TICK-TOCK TICK-TOCK

3 days until the weekend helinuts. Tick, Tock. I'll bet you think I'm talking about the clock ticking away until this weekend at Zolen's Heli Haven in Kalkaska. WRONG, I rode my motorcycle to Rapid City this morning to loan Lars Schwab a Webra .91 for his EVO 90 heli. He is waiting for a new OS engine or repaired OS .91 from Hobby Services. The tick tock comes from Lars. He was showing me his tuned-up Raptor 30 with OS .37, and he says to me, "I have it going pretty good now and can "tick-tock" a whole tank now. Yikes. And last week he watched young Stephen Stendrowski wring-out his TITAN 50 with 611 gyro. That was all it took, Monday morning Lars called Heliproz and just wait until you see what he ordered. He even ordered the ARF version with 3-day shipping so he and Chris Zolen will be wrenching hard on Thursday to have his new toy airworthy on Friday. Even Nick Harwood was lamenting not having a 611 gyro last week, so this week he's moaning and groaning to Dave Johnson, and Dave called his bluff, I'll buy your 401 and servo. YIPPEE, Nick shouts and runs right out and orders a 611. Dave continues to upgrade, new 401, just sold the TIGER 50 and is looking at a nice EVO 50 on his bench with a Hyper 50 in it. But, hold it right there heli friends, Dave is going crazy. He started the spring flying .46's, but now he wants a double shot of power, 2x.46 and you get .90. Yep, Dave has .90 fever. Rumor is, even Rich Smith has 90 Fever. It's contagious. Why even Nick Harwood is already talking faster, lighter, more powerful, I see a new 90 in his future real soon. Meanwhile two of our legion have their new TREX600 NITRO'S ready for the weekend, Tony Lawhead and Steve Balyo will be zooming around the skies of Kalkaska showboating their newly completed and flown 600N's. Sounds like we are going to be flying harder, faster, lower and bigger this weekend. WATCH THIS.

Anyway, I have the hamburgers covered, Steve Stendrowski has the Brats covered, Dave Johnson has the Beans covered. Mark Bonofiglio is going to surprise us with his deep fryer. If everyone brings one thing we will be eating great and having fun. Anybody have a "Rumball" recipe? Pizza's will be ordered Saturday night. Chris Zolen is taking care of the coffee and donuts Sunday morning. Some folks are so stoked they will be coming over Friday night to set up campers, tents, and to fly and maybe even stay the night. Just keep an eye on the weather and bring a comfy chair, warm coat, big cooler and your favorite beverage (wink wink) maybe a coffee cup. I mean Bailey's around the campfire and night flying sounds great. Flashlight. Expect to arrive back home smelling smokey, the campfire will be big. Light sticks and glowwire if you got some.

See you Saturday and Sunday. Even if you can only come for one day, that is great. Steve Fink, we better see you this weekend. How do you think you pulled off that amazing first autorotation from inverted, because God wanted you flying in Kalkaska, that's why. Looking forward to seeing any of our past heli friends from last fall and this past spring. If you are bringing a camper or motorhome there is a two track just before you get to Chris's house that will take you around to the backside of the flying field and you won't have to cream your vehicles on Chris's trees in his yard.

To get there if you don't know, Get to Kalkaska, find the Burger King on the north end of town at intersection of US 31 and M-72, turn East (hwy 612) and go about 1 mile to the golf course. Opposite the golf course is Log Lake Rd., turn here and follow the road to the very end, the log home is Chris's house and the flying field is way in the back.

Boys Day out on Black Friday

Yuck, Thanksgiving morning, woke up and it is all white outside.
Come on warm air. Oh well, it will just make the "real helicopter"
pilots tougher. Chef Dave and Chef Mike are busy making the venison
stew and chili, Chris and Tony are fetching white pine tree stumps for the bonfire. Brad Matznick is bringing a propane heater to keep the lightweights warm. The annual gathering of "Heli Men in Trees"
is going ahead regardless. Just dress warmer and charge batteries more often. Your choices are, "Freeze in the Trees" or "Stall in the Mall".
So drive carefully and we will see you tomorrow after about 0930hrs
to get in some year end heli-fun at Chris Zolen's in Kalkaska.
If you get lost, call 231-631-9615.

Get away from that tree, that one is mine.

Another great outing on Black Friday

If you went to the mall and got your shopping done, good for you. 12 of us didn't. With the temp arond 30 degrees a fresh layer of white stuff on the ground, a dozen hearty souls trekked to Kalkaska to prove that Turkeys can fly. I drove in the drive to find a handful of eager beavers busy nailing plastic wind screens on the club house to keep out the wind and hold in the heat. Yes, I said heat. Instead of being a couch potatoe, Chris Zolen sacrificed his Thanksgiving nap and rounded up a nice interior fireplace and installed it in the heli shack. No more smokey clothes standing by the bonfire. The fireplace radiated heat nicely and we had a great place to sit about and tell lies and heckle the next pilot as he ventured out to put up his flight. The sky was mostly blue and a few flakes added to the experience. The crockpots with the chili and venison stew were cooking on the bench and Mark Bonofiglio had a big urn of hot chocolate that lasted all day along with the fresh coffee brewing and lots of nice donuts and pastries to munch on. The nice little propane heaters also added to the warmth and put new meaning to the phrase, " your ass is on fire", should one not be paying attention and you happened to back into one of the glowing little radiators.
The heli flying ranged from lots of scale ships to fishheads and a Trex 450's. We did hear lots of complaining from cold one-way bearings, we should have sprayed all of those down with WD40 before the first flights of the day. Only had two crashes for the day, my just repaired Tiger 50 and Rich Schultz's TREX 450 both did the dirt dance for unexplained reasons. Oh, well, they will both be back.
Once the Sun started to get low and the temp started to drop, we packed up our helis and adjourned to the Tiki Room for Pizza, beer and the latest DVD Rich Schultz purchased and starred in from the 2007 IRCHA experience.
Thanks to Chris, Mark, Steve & Steve, Tony & Jerry, Lars, Dave, Coastie Steve, Coastie Rich and Brad for showing up and having a great time.
Notice the pictures and the new fireplace is in the corner.

Die Hards still at it

Got a call and Chris Z, Tony L, and Lars S were out flying in the snow yesterday. The fireplace was stoked and so were they. Tony had his new MD 500 Defender flying for the first time. Will post more when I hear about it. Oh, Chris's Alouette III is on it's way out west and he is shopping for a new scale project. Just about everyone is building one this winter so the first spring gathering is going to be fun. Lots of scale helis and Raptors and Trex Nitros everywhere.

2008 Indoor Flying Schedue for NWMICH heli pilots

Hello Helinuts,
Well, we have 6 opportunities to do a little indoor
flying with small electric helis and planes again this winter.
The folks from the tribe up by Leelanau Sands Casino have
said we can have a 4hour period 10 AM to 2 PM to fly inside.
If the weather is clear we can even fly our helis outside as there is
a ballfield and lots of clear area adjacent to the Strongheart Center.
So if you are in the TC/Suttons Bay area on a few Saturdays and want
to have a little fun come on up. TRAMPS members and BARCs members
may be there with small indoor planes and new guys with electrics they have purchased from the local hobby shops may be present too.
We mark up a poster and keep track of frequencies if you are not using 2.4ghz to control the kaos. We just want it to be fun, safe, and not do any damage to the facility. If you need directions send me a PM.
Should the tribe need the facility for something special,or unexpected like a funeral, I will get the word out, so check back for any changes to the following schedule. Share a ride and save some gas.

Schedule for now is:

Jan. 12 Saturday,

Jan. 26 Saturday,

Feb. 9 Saturday,

Feb. 23 Saturday

Mar. 8 Saturday

Mar. 29 Saturday

10AM to 2PM

Wear some old socks or bring some slippers as we are flying on a basketball floor. There are nice tables so bring a bag lunch or snack and they have soda machines. Some of us stop for lunch in Suttons Bay afterwards. Come on out, it makes the winter go by faster.

1st 2008 Indoor Flying session, Success again

Hello TRAMPS, BARCS, HELINUTS and others,
Well if you remained home last Saturday morning, I sure hope you got some chores done and scored some honey-do points to be redeemed
later this flying season. If you just wasted the morning shoveling snow or watching cartoons, we all feel sorry for you. Now for the good news,
20 intrepid souls made their way up to Leelanau Sands casino and the Strongheart Center to have a great time inside and out. When I rounded the corner and pulled into my parking spot I looked over and "all the usual suspects" those are my crazy NWMICHIGAN heli nuts were in the process of fueling and unloading their helis and gear. The weather was gray but calm and no snow so Chris Zolen and Steve Stedronsky put some nitro in their 50 size helis and got in some flying while I went into set up things in the gym for the indoor flying. I was greeted by a smiling Jason Hill, facility director and soon the troops were marching in with the boxes, cases, chargers, batteries and assorted junk. Jamie Vanwingen was first to arrive with a big toy box and two little kids in tow. The sign-in poster went up on the wall and everyone jotted down their name, aircraft type, frequency type and channel. The 72mhz is slowly going by the wayside, even in the new little Park Zone and Eflite airplanes and helis. This is just great. Jamie had his Blade CX heli and his new little PARK ZONE CESSNA airplane flying great. There were 3 of these little CESSNA's on 2.4ghz and they fly great and are just perfect for a gym. I did a normal wheel take off and beautiful landing flying one of these. These are available at Trains and Things, see Stan. Some of our friends from BARCS came along with Dick Jerue and his magic box of homebrew airplanes, rubber planes, and ornithopters. Orin Eldred had the BARCS TRAINER, just kidding, the most unusual and neatest flying thing I have seen so far. He had this big dragonfly-looking aircraft that flaps it's wings and has a side thruster in the tail for steering and it is RC and is great in the air. Jamie Vanwiggen was so fascinated with it, he went home and found them at Walmart and reports they are on sale for about $30. They have the coolest bright l.e.d green bug eyes. We had about 8-9 TREX 450's all flying great. Chris Zolen and Rich Schultz are the indoor TREX kings rolling, looping and flying inverted in the tight gym. Jeff Devincent , Tony Lawhead,Chris Zolen, Rich Smith, Rich Schultz, Steve Horacek and myself all had TREX's. Scotty Anderson had a really blinged out and nice flying Blade CX along with Jamie flying the same. Jim Eggert was there with his wacky weird aircraft too having fun. We also had some Airhogs, and Rich Schultz had this cool astronaut/heliman ready to fly, but he had eaten just a little too much Christmas turkey and his little battery couldn't get him up. Funny, Jeff Devincent and I discovered the same thing after crawling on the floor working on our helis, old age, and holiday weight gains made standing up a real bone crackling, stiff-joint experience, sounded like a truck going through the ice. Jeff's son came out for the first time and is flying his dad's old Hirobo XRB beautifully and is ready to move up to Jeff's new Raptor Mini-Titan, similar to a TREX.
As for planes, the little Cessnas were fun, and several new and unusual types flew. Steve Horacek had a neat extremely aerobatic foam circular plane, looks sort of like a cross between a lady-bug and a toilet seat. Sure does fly well.
The flying moved back outside for a few folks after noon. Chris put up his TREX 600 NITRO PRO and put on a show. He was really into it. While Chris was otherwise occupied, a Tribal Police SUV arrived to watch. Now you need know that in the past Chris has been a little AMA-challenged. Anyway his buddies talked the officer into driving over to where TREX-crazed Chris was flying. The officer did as asked and drove over, stepped up to his side and proceeded to say, "Excuse me sir, Do You Have An AMA license?" Out of his peripheral vision Chris sees a brown jacket, brown uniform shirt complete with badges, name tags, very official. Suffice it to say, that you could here Chris drop a load, while trying not to crash his heli. He responds, Ee, Eeh, Eh, yes sir it is in my wallet, but..but...buttt, it is expired". When he finally landed and turned around, there he stood flushed and looking up about a dozen helinuts rolling on the ground laughing at his dilemma. So the moral of the story is, get your AMA dues paid soon.
2 PM finally came and the end of great day of flying fun was over. Dick Jerue and friends adjourned to the very nice Village Inn in Suttons Bay for a delicious lunch. The heli nuts all proceeded to my house for a major "wrench session, beer, soda, meatballs and pizza". I had 4 work stations setup along with heli videos on the TVs in my basement. 9 fellows showed up and we ate some nice barbeque meatballs, crackers, cookies and then headed to the workshop to wrench on my TIGER 50, RAPTOR 50, STINGER 90, and my son ALEXANDER'S new HIROBO SHUTTLE. The hard part for me was keeping track of these 9 guys as I had to hide all my un-opened new kits, gyros, engines, governors and other heli goodies. These guys have the stickiest fingers I know, but I love 'em to death for coming over and laughing lying and helping get my fleet back to airworthy for this coming season.
Dave Johnson brought his Aircobra scale project to get ideas and advice as he is working on this one. We sent out for PaPa Johns pizzas for dinner as the wrenching continued. Nick Harwood showed up with parts of his new SYNERGY N9$$$$$$$. Chris, and I set up all our goodies to help him dial-indicate his new motor and start shaft system. Finally the Shuttle was finished and so up to the garage we went. Another successful first flight with a very nice new trainer heli with a Futaba 401 gyro, and Throttle Jockey governor. Alex will be styling come spring.
My big thanks to Chris, CGSteve, SteveSR,SteveJR,Dave,Lars,Tony, Jerry, Nick for all the fun and help. What a great time and hobby.
Hope to see some more of you on the 26th 10 AM to 2 PM

Round 2 indoors

Guess Who?

I am up early and hovering near my fresh cup of hot coffee and the old electronic tablet is in my lap. Well, Saturday, started out as a ho-hum dead in the middle of the winter, stuck between the Play-offs and Super Bowl weekend. Snow was falling and the sky was gray. What to do, Ta Da!!!! Jump in the old hoop tee and take all the electric toys up to Strongheart Center and forget about everything and go fly. So, with charged batteries, a thermos of coffee and one of chicken soup, it was over the river and along the bay to Jason Hill's place to play. I arrived to find that Bill Suhy, Rich Smith, Jeff and Mike Devincent, and the Vanwingen family were already inside prepping aircraft for flight. I lugged my boxes, cases, batteries, chargers and thermos equipment inside and kicked off my shoes for a few hours of playtime. More and more folks dragged in over the next hour until my last head count came up with 14 pilots all flying or prepping their aircraft. Scotty Anderson and Jim Eggert were on hand again. Scotty got brave and took the training sticks off of his CX helicopter and had an electric bi-plane also. Now he just needs a bi-plane pilot, sorry Coastie Rich, isn't that guy. But he is the go-to-guy to get uncompleted projects done and even Scottie pushed a nice Slow Park flyer on him to resurrect for future sessions and also to wow the troops over in the Coast Guard hangers. Steve Horacek and all the little Schultz and Horacek boys were there having fun with their little aircraft. Steve owes his son a new airplane as he has about a bazillion miles on his son's little twin pusher bi-plane. Orin Eldred was there again with his collection of odd duck flying machines, but they all fly and are so cool to watch with weird shapes and bright lights. He and Steve Horacek have a pair of these flying circular foamies, red and blue.
When they fly it looks like ladybug mating season with all the loops, rolls, twists and turns. Stanley Hyman, was there again, we can always count on Stan for something new and unusual. He had a really nice 3 D style plane this time. Only problem was this thing is a rocket and rolls over faster than a Vegas Call girl. Nice plane but she just needed a little more room to spread her wings, sure hit that wall and top bleacher area faster than you could believe. Don't give up Stan. Repair it and maybe we can book the Silver Dome sometime.
The TREX 450 MAFIA was out in force again, I had 2, followed by Rich Schultz, Steve Horacek, Jeff Devincent, Rich Smith and a new one for friend Bill Oliver. Bill Suhy and Mike Devincent had a pair of Hirobo XRB's flying, and Jamie Vanwingen and Scottie Anderson had Blade CX's in the air. The most fun was had by the boys with the nice PARK ZONE CESSNA airplanes, they fly just great, have good battery life and come with spread spectrum radios 2.4ghz. See Stan down at TRAINS & THINGS if you are interested in one of those CESSNA's.
Jamie also had a mate for Orin, both of these guys had the neat flapping wing dragon-fly aircraft, Orin's has green eyes and Jamie's has blue eyes. Other visitors include Steve Stedronsky Sr, without son this time, I guess the snowboarding conditions at Crystal mountain were too good to pass up this weekend. Troy Raymond drove all the way up from Marion to talk photography with some of the guys and he also brought along a bunch of the NW Michigan Helicopter Pilots decals. So I have a bunch for sale to help Troy recover some of his investment. Jeff Neuman was there eyeing the activity as he saves for equipment for his Stinger 50
helicopter for this spring. Absent this week was Chris Z as he is on his way to the beaches of Mexico with the family for some sun and fun. Lars most likely out plowing and playing hockey, and Dave Johnson was home looking for his thong as he and Heli-Princess are off to Hawaii for some attitude adjustment. Tony Lawhead was gone, but with Chris out of town that is to be expected they are sort of a heli-support system symbiotic relationship. We had lots of fun and will be doing it again soon enough. So finish a toy and come on out, 100 days until it is good outdoor flying season again.

Don't forget to pay those club dues and get that AMA license money in the mail. Remember TRAMPS guys, the FEBRUARY monthly meeting will be at the USCG AIR STATION in Traverse
City. Come on out TRAMPS and other surrounding club members. Thanks to Rich and Steve for arranging this for us. Enjoy these guys this winter and spring, they have both
been promoted and we will be losing them over the summer.

3 down and 3 to go

Hi Rotorfriends,
I took a look at the old database and thought of all the new trades & purchases of helicopters and spread spectrum radios and
decided to clean up the database. I also dumped some of the deadwood that we have never seen in over a year. The folks you see
on this list we have seen at a round-up, sat around a campfire with, drained some beer cans with, flown indoors with or helped pick-up
crash wreckage in the last year. One fellow, Jason Lewis, I kept on there so when he comes back to the area on vacations, he is moving to
Ohio with a new job but is always welcome to join us. He maintained the Petosky PAMA webpage.
Our indoor sessions continue and we have reached the halfway point with last Saturday's 3rd session. We still have 3 more sessions this winter.
16 pilots and kids joined in the fun before the blizzard arrived. Some nice TREX flying from Chris Z, Tony Lawhead, Steve Horacek, Jeff Devincent, Lars Schwab and my 2 helis. Mike Devincent and Dad, Jeff got the new MINI-TITAN flying and trimmed with the help of Chris Zolen fresh back from his vacation in Mexico. Rich Smith brought out a neat new foam 3D airplane with unbelievable capability, more than anyone in our crowd can muster. The old guard from TRAMPS flew lots of interesting little planes, ornithopters, flying disks, flapping dragonfly and blue foam biplane aircraft. It was a pleasant day and some retired to the Village Inn for lunch, Chris, Tony and myself headed to Hooters for buffalo wings, fried pickles, fish&chips, and burgers. Just as an aside the TRAMPS monthly meeting is Wednesday night at 7PM and will be held at the USCG Air Station Traverse City. If you care to join the event, bring some ID and at the gate identify yourself as a member or guest of TRAMPS. Thanks to Rich Schultz and Stever Horacek for arranging this opportunity. To all our downstate heli friends, we hope you are building new birds, flying your sims and maybe have a chance to get some indoor practice in and we are looking forward to seeing you in the spring and this summer.

Hug your Helicopter

Spring Flying Northwest Michigan Style & Beer Eggs

Just lying back and enjoying the sofa after a nice Easter Dinner. Actually I am catching some ZZZZ's. Why so tired you ask? Well, Saturday was cold and sunny, but spring was in the air and so were the helicopters. Stopped for beer and chips, so with shopping done it was off to Chris's to gather with all the helibears coming out of their dens and caves after a long winter's snooze, like grizzlies and black bears. Winding my way done the single lane snow snake drive to the club house, I parked and was the caboose for a long line of cars. When I arrived, I found lots of sodas and cans of beer buried in the snowbanks like adult Easter Eggs. Only difference between Easter Eggs and Beer Eggs, we don't hide them as well, so the old timers have an easier time finding the treasure. The clubhouse was fitted with the plastic window/curtains and the fire in the fireplace was roaring. The tables and benches were full of bright new helicopters waiting to take flight and drive away the winter chill and ushering in Spring. The snack table had packages of hotdogs, buns, onions, condiments, and a big hot crock of chili to make chili dogs and bags of chips. All was right with the world, food, drink, fuel, helicopters and lots of smiling faces. A rundown of the helibears there to shake off the winter includes, Chris Zolen, Mark Bonofiglio, Rich Smith, Steve Horacek, Steve Balyo and newbie Tim,Steve and Steve Jr. Stedronsky, Tony and Jerry Lawhead, and myself. The flying was good and everyone was trying something new and advancing their heli equipment and prowess. Tony Lawhead was flying great and Tony has his new Carbsmart working on his TREX600N Pro. Mark Bonofiglio has a new combined set of mechanics and head to make a nice electric package for his scale Ecruiel body. Steve Jr. Stedronsky had his Raptor 50 looking great with a smart new
canopy and the boy has skills. Big Steve Balyo was getting back to form with his TREX600N and has the EVO 50 on the operating table and it will be back to new before the snow is gone. The flying continues in the bright sunshine with lots of teasing, cheering and joking. Coast Guard Steve got initiated in the wonderful world of flying with a governor and turned into a madman. He was going nuts with all that new found rotorhead energy and even got in some ticktoks, flips, flops, consecutive rolls and a few "whathehellwasthat's". That poor Raptor 50 is in for a summer full of punishment. Now, I have been flying with Chris Zolen for 17 years, and with his new TREX600N running like a swiss-watch, I saw him put up the best flight I have ever seen him fly. Thanks for keeping up the pressure on the both of us, it is fun pushing it with friends and you can all see how far we have come since September of 2006. Now take a look at what we call spring skiing in Northwest Michigan.
Now get the spring jobs done and get your helis ready because May 17 is only 55 days away. Mark that date, Saturday May 17. TRAMPS Rennie School Rd field. The 3rd Northwest Michigan Helicopter Pilots Roundup. There will be a $10 landing fee and food will be available to all registered pilots. The official flyer will follow shortly, so mark the date and tell your heli friends to come on up and kick off the summer the right way. Bring the family and turn them lose on the area. Give them the car to go enjoy spring hiking and the trilliums will be coming up. They can hit all the local shops, state parks a week before the tourists arrive for the Memorial Day Weekend.
Once the Roundup takes place it is going to be a heliuva busy summer, TRAMPS AIRSHOW, HIROBO CUP, MID AMERICA HELI DETROIT, LUZERNE, PAMA, IRCHA, TUSTIN, WATERVLIET, HELI-DEER CAMP at Chris's.
For the TC locals, don't forget March 29th is the last indoor flying session up at the STRONGHEART CENTER at Lake Leelanau Sands Casino. 10AM to 2PM. If the weather is bright and sunny bring that nitro bird and get in some licks at the same time.
Final thoughts, let's keep it safe this year, keep that distance between yourself and that helicopter, do the maintenance needed, fly within your skills, a smooth pretty slow flight is just as good as any 3D flight, give other helis space. One of our buddies, Brad Matznick has been fighting the big C down in Ann Arbor and hopefully is on the mend back home and will be ready to show off that big new 90 size 109 heli this summer. Give Brad a thought this week. Finally, remember to pass it forward, think about where this group was 2 years ago and look at us now. Now where is the basket of beer-eggs I picked up?

T-minus two weeks and counting 14,13,12,11,10,9...............

Finally, we are enjoying our third day of spring. Better get that yard work done, get that boat ready, wash that winter
grime off those cars, get those windows sparkling so the wife monster doesn't have any excuse to grab you by the scruff
of the neck two weeks from today. Yes, it's that time again. Time to smell the nitro, puff the packs, bend the blends, flip the
switches and put a smile on your face. This is your last chance to get that heli humming, to finish that ARF, to update that
bling on your geared-girlfriend. Oh, "Don't Forget, next week, take care of that Mother's Day stuff. Should you forget, you will
be in the doghouse so long, that you will surely not make the 3RD Northwest Michigan Heli Pilots round-up, the official kick off of
the summer flying season for the rotating masses.
I have had notes from folks to the south that are looking to spend the day with us. The shutter-bugs are looking to come out and
document our fun and games. The grill will be ready for us to study up on meaty subjects while we feed our need for speed with our
new helis. So charge'em, lube'em, hover'em, get the manuals dusted off, get that AMA renewed, check your chair and your EZE-UP
tents. Saturday is the Day, Sunday is the rain day should the weather gods disappoint us. There maybe a few of us hearty souls out
tuning up on Friday afternoon and if there are enough souls we will pass the hat and go up the street for a few buckets of chicken chased down
with some sodas and other to be named liquids as we consume a little nitro-methane.
The trees are budding, the hiking trails are open and the trilliums and mushrooms are popping in the woods, so load up the car and head up to Traverse City for an early summer weekend before the gas goes to $4.00 and the hotel prices compare to a good pair of V-Blades. Dress accordingly, that
means everything from shorts to polar fleece, hey it's Michigan, get over it.
Heli On Chris!!, Heli On Mike!!!! Shhwwiiiinggg.

Oh, BTW, the alternate heli field and beer barn over at Chris's in Kalkaska has gone through some radical updates and now sports 220-volt electrical
service, windows, doors, decks and more to come. So it is going to be a good summer up north flying helis, especially at the "Termite Teepee".
