e-MS Composit Hornet > Hornet: No Broken Tailboom for Me

Scince I bought my Hornet I have been looking over all the stuff on the net about it. I noticed that a lot of folks that have crashed have had broken tailbooms. As I was building the latest member of my fleet. I thought the tailboom (while georgous) looked kind of fragile. I also didn't like the fit of it, mine was not straight and was loose in the frames and tail gearbox. Not to mention the fact that you have to be VERY careful about how much you tighten the grub screws.

I searched around and found a replacement that will cost you $5-$10 and about 2-3 grams extra weight and I garrentee you will never break it. Go to your local Archery shop and pick up a 1/4" CF arrow shaft. You will need to drill out the tail gear box and frames to 19/64ths (I think that was the size) and put two rounds of Scotch tape on the outside of your bearings to take up the slight difference in diameter.

Now your tailboom will fit tight enough in the frames and tailgearbox that you shouldn't even need the grub screws. I put mine in for safety but I don't suspect they would be needed. It is also ABSOLUTELY straight and consistant in diameter.

If you break that, you will have a lot of other trouble than just a broken tailboom.

Cheers,
Malorie

arrow shaft

I don't suppose you know the manufacturer of the shaft? I was just at the local archery shop and there was a bewildering array of shafts available. Unfortunately I didn't have my calipers with me so I couldn't measure them.

What's left of the shaft I used says "BEMAN ICS 400" "ICS Hunter". This one is slightly oversized from the stock tailboom but the shop I bought it from only had this brand that was close. I also didn't have my caliper with me so I used a ruler they had lying around to find one that was close. If you bring your caliper with you and find one the exact right size, could you post which brand and model it is?

Thanks,
Malorie

I have heard that the "Easton Platinum 1713 superlite" is almost an exact fit within .002 of the stock boom. It is aluminum though. I haven't checked it out to see if it is available in different colors.

I still use the stock boom with no problems and with the Hornet's tendency to be tail heavy, I am reluctant to put any more weight back there. Besides if you build them to survive crashes (usually requires adding weight) then they don't do their original job (fly) as well.

I agree with the tail heavy concern. Most of the time I agree with you that building them to crash usually sacrafices performance but in this case gaining 2-3 grams is no concern as far as making the machine too heavy. I've saved far more than that elsewhere on the heli. So far mine is weighing in around 180 grams w/o the battery. It should perform like a champion.

The arrowshaft that I am using is very close to the right size, it may be only a couple of thousandths off. It must be some sort of standard arrowshaft size. I would have preferred an anodized aluminum shaft but the store I went to didn't have any in a close diameter. I think the aluminum would have been even lighter.
