Tools and Field Equipment > Greaesr - Can I get by without one?

I am going to re-grease some bearings in my raptor ( ie: main grip bearings, tail bearings etc... ).

I dont have 'The Greaser' and I was wondering if I can get by without one for a while. I do plan on getting one, but not right now.

Anyone ever use just the 'hands' method, any luck with this method?

Thanks,
Dean

Ah, I think perhaps I will wait a while on getting one. I will start greasing my bearings soon, without having to waiting.

So, I guess you just use the gob of grease in your hand, drive the bearing into it, move it around, turn over try again.. etc/..?!?

Any technique to it?

Thanks for the input.

Dean , you could have try using syringe method. do not load too much in it else would be hard to squeeze the grease out of it.

On some shielded bearings you can remove the shields by removing the c-clips to clean and grease them.

I bought a Greaser before Christmas, but haven't used it yet, don't want to strip a heli down just to try it out!

Don't know if you've SEEN the greaser yet, but it is an 'interesting' shape and created much amusement at the customs office when they insisted that I opened the package,. Looked rather 'intimate', shall we say! I bought the recommended grease from Pete's as well, and was warned it smells bad, so didn't try to stop the customs officer from removing the cap of the tube and having a big sniff

Great device! I have used mine a lot as I try to always be in the tinkering stage on something. I definitely have gotten my use out of mine. I have used it in the past with triflow grease and now exclusively use the Bosch purple stuff.
Easier to pack the bearings with this and faster than other methods.

<<...faster than other methods...>>

Marlon hit it. The Greaser is a convenience device, nothing more. But once you've used one, you will NOT go back to doing it "by hand".

Ray, I hear ya. Sometimes we oldsters are accused of resisting progress (if some of these gadgets can be called that).

For instance, I'm still managing to get by without one of those high speed/low drag temp guns...

I have one and use it all the time. In fact, I was the one that showed Ray Stacy the "light". The nice part about "The Greaser" is that it purges the junk grease out of new bearings, while installing good grease. My advice, run the bearings you have, the way they are. When you can see your way clear to buy a Greaser, buy a new set of bearings also.

rchelial: I may do just that, get a greaser when I get new bearings.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I am going to wait a while to get a greaser.
I have the main grips apart now, I am going to grease up the thrust brg and grip bearings for now. Within the next week I will do a tear down and grease main shaft bearings etc.... give it a try without the greaser...... then purchace one when I replace all the bearings.

Dean, take a look at the bearings in the start shaft and the clutch bell. Those take the most abuse, because of the speed that they turn.
