i also have a question, i use Mobil jetoil,

Looking at the makeup of it and recommendations,
Mobil Jet Oil II is a high performance aircraft-type gas turbine lubricant
formulated with a combination of a highly stable synthetic base fluid and a
unique chemical additive package. The combination provides
outstanding thermal and oxidative stability to resist deterioration and
deposit formation in both the liquid and vapour phases, as well as excellent
resistance to foaming. The effective operating range of Mobil Jet Oil II is
between -40 C (-40 F) and 204 C (400 F).

our turbines work at a lot higher temp than that, so does this mean the oil is ineffective at this high temp?

Don't worry Matt, that oil is used in large turbofan engines. The max EGT for a GE CF6-50 engine is around 910C if I memory serves me correctly. After that you get a little red light come on and the flight engineer startes working out his excuse for exceeding the limit
Also, don't forget turbine oil is normally scavenged back into a tank as part of the oil system. Our's goes straight out the back.

A higher quality oil is Mobil 245 but it is more expensive and is dark in colour.

Is there a good turbine oil that is less dangerous for the users ? Some of these oils need to be treated carefully (long list of health warnings).
I believe for Aeroshell, you need the 500.

No, it's all toxic and they are all similar in composition as they have to conform to regulatory standards. There is no safe turbine oil I'm affraid.

I can't afford any this but that hasn't stopped me. I thought turbine oil was a good substitute for fish oil. That explains the blindness.

Besides the oil being carcinogenic, what about hte Kerosene or Jet A itself?

I mean, it seems somewhat silly to be arguing about the safest oil, when the omnipresent problem is the fuel itself!!

Any one ever seen an MSDS on Jet A?

I think the oil is proven to be carcinogenic, whereas paraffin has been used worldwide for Donkey’s years in lamps to light homes and I have not heard anything about people keeling over with some awful decease caused by the use of paraffin lamps in the 2nd. World war. It’s quite likely that most things are carcinogenic, but to different degrees.

Castrol 2T burnt with Kero is not a bad smell; I don’t know why Calvin Klein don’t bottle it.

It's okay to use for our purpose. It's when you get bathed in it that problems occur especially if this happens frequently. It is not nice stuff though - no petroleum product is. As an aside, methanol is treated like poison in the aircraft industry as it readily absorbes through skin causing nasty things to happen to your liver. How many 'glow' flyers even know this?
