e-Minicopter Joker > 12T pinion problem

I had a flange come off my pinion. Luckily I was just hovering for my third flight with the pinion and 14S lipo packs. Since my drive belt tends to run on the high side the belt didn't come off, but in taking out the battery the flange was laying on top of the battery.

It looks like there's not much holding the flange on so I'm going to do what I did when I made a 13T pinion. Glue the flange and then JB Weld a shim on top. Pictures are below. The pinion on the right is a 13T I made with a shim glued on top. The middle pinion is the Minicopter 12T with flange off and the shim I will glue on it. The right pinion is a Minicopter 15T pinion. I've had many hundreds of flights with it and a 14T.

Maybe I was just unfortunate, but since there's so little contact area between the pinion and flange and no punch marks to hold the flange I think you need to do something to make it more robust.

That does seem like a small contact area for the stock pinion. Thanks for the info. You did this to both sides?

There are other threads in this forum about this same problem... Seems like a known issue for which the "answer" is if it's setup properly, it should not happen... well.. I'm sure you where convinced it was all ok right?

As for motor speed 14S on a 32-4 is no faster than a normal Joker with a 32-3 and 10S or 11S. The Maxi blades are heavier, but then the flying style isn't as aggressive.

I'm no pinion expert, but a 12T does seem kind of small. What kind of setup do you target a 12T pinion for?

This motor support upgrade #848 sounds like a good idea. I can't find a picture of it. Is there a bearing in the motor mount plate or ?

14S wasn't for a higher headspeed, but longer flight times. With the current battery offerings a 14S 5 amp battery will fit the Joker frames easier than a 10S 7 amp equivalent battery. I guess I'm probably going back to a 14T pinion and 12S as the best compromise.

I'm flying a Maxi Joker. Actro 32-4 Max, PowerJazz, 14T pinion, 12S (5 amp) lipo battery, and 1350rpm headspeed. I changed the pinion to 12T and increased the lipos to 14S (5 amp) maintaining the same headspeed for longer flights. The motor speed goes up, but it's still less than many of the 3D guys with standard Jokers. Today in some tests I was getting an extra 1.5 to 2 minutes of flight time. Pretty much as expected.

I primarily posted the pictures for those people who might be worried about the flanges as there were a few posts about them. It might be overkill, but gluing a shim on the pinion could add some strength. You still have to check the belt to make sure there's no excessive wear.

Gerd,

You have some 'rules of thumb' we can use to check that our belts (main and tail) are not too tight or too loose ?.

Thanks,

JohnC

I'm not sure I would recognise 20-30Hz even if someone played it direct into my ear through a loudspeaker !.

If I apply mild to medium pressure to twist the main drive belt, how far should it twist ?. 90 degrees ?.

Beat cautious(!!) with the flat hand on your ear, then you hear the tone the belt should do, too. These tone is the lowest frequeny a human can hear. Is that explained now good enough?

John, a toothed belt should not be twisted, try better to press it 3-4 mm with thumb. But please donīt ask now how much thumb pressure is...
