Having built this machine about 3 years ago I finally got it sorted & managed some proper flying.

here is a bit of video of it flying. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=w8JsbM_qGJ0

It sounds brilliant as it flies around, blades making the characteristic wop wop wop the full size chinook makes
superb stuff.

Very impressive, and obviously flies nicely. It would be nice to see some close-ups of the innards.

I hope you don't mind me saying, but it reminds me of a Daschund.

A bit like a kite, but 500 times more expensive

Fantastic, think its the same one I saw a while ago you had some pitch instability problems, how did you sort it? what mixer are you using if any? you have a few pictures in your gallery but it would be nice to see some construction pictures

Flies really well and looks and sounds great in the air, I think an awful lot of people have tried making tandems of this size without any real success well done!

Excellent. Probably the best flying Tandem I have seen. Please describe it well for us.

Dave, that is some really nice work. You have that thing flying really well. Seeing that gets me thinking that there is hope I can find some mechanics to put in my Vario CH-47 fuse. Looks like you even have some forward tilt to the forward rotorhead like the full size. I would love to see if you could help me figure something out for my fuse. I just want to make it either electric or petro since it is a large fuse and it will be very detailed I dont want the smoke of a nitro motor. The electric version might be a bit pricey though.

My twin heli is made up from two Morley Maverick heli's with my own chassis joining them together.
The drive to the rear rotor is via bevel gears & a drive shaft.
I have 3 servo ccpm on both rotors using 2 commercial ccpm mixers.
I am using differential collective for for & aft cyclic with very small amounts of fore & aft cyclic on the front rotor (very similar setup to that used by hirobo on the vertol)

forward stick gives ....front swash tips forward & collective is reduced while rear collective is increased.

back stick gives .... front swash tips back & collective increases while rear collective is reduced.

roll .... both swashplates go in same direction.

yaw .... front & rear swashplates go in opposite directions.

collective ..... both rotors increase & decrease pitch together.

the mixing in the transmitter is interesting to say the least.

the cg is about 4" forward of the center of the heli, I have tried moving it back to center & forward 4 or 5" but it doesn't seem to make much difference to the flying.

Flying is pretty solid in the hover with just a bit of touchiness on for & aft cyclic, forward flight is ok but it seems to wander in yaw, probably a lack of side area at the rear & a nice big canopy at the front.
I have fitted a gyro on the rear collective for pitch damping & one on the rear rotor for yaw damping.

Very Nicely Done....

Great job on your set up.... it looks very well mannered in flight...and there are more then one of us out here that would like to have mechanics to load into the Vario unit...
I have been flying the Hirobo Vertol now for the better part of this season, and having very good luck with it has made me really want to put a larger "smokless" version together...(gas or electric???:confused)
Keep the info coming and thank you for sharing your project with us..

Stan

If there is a cure for this, please don't tell me about it!!!
