To start with i woke up late

Then I had to to do a 300 mile return journey to see a customer and on way back I ran out of fuel!! Gauge showing 1/4 but tank empty, walked 2 miles to garage and bought a gallon, put it in van and tried to bleed fuel system (diesel), battery went flat before i finished. Sat and waited for 2 hours by side of road for the repair guy to come as someone told him wrong address. He eventually came and got me started so off i went and got back home after 10 hours on road.

I will get to the heli crash in a min..keep reading...

At the weekend i had spent 5 hours installing a revlock 10 on my hawk and thought i would go and chill out after the crap day i have had and do a bit of gentle flying and hovering. The heli was flying great so i turned up the headspeed and started to do some inverted hovering. Then it all went wrong, my thumbs stalled at 10ft and the heli crashed to the ground blades first did a big 12ft jump to the right and then came down heavy on the nose, it then as if in slow motion fell tail first into the pond i had crashed next to and slowly sank out of sight!!

I ran over jumped in and fished it out, shook the water off it and threw it in the back of the van laughing to myself as i took my wet boots and socks off thinking this can not get any worse....

Just finished stripping it, it did get worse, damage so far...

FUBAR parts-
Pair of Carbon blades (2 flights old) destroyed
Blade grip broken
Main shaft and feathering shaft bent
Flybar bent and one paddle missing, infact most of the head is trashed
Link rods missing or bent
Most of the gears damaged
Tail boom and torque tube bent
Canopy smashed
1 month old Hatori pipe dented and bent
OS37 (2 months old) damaged the casing were muffler fits, may be ok.
Lower side frames bent
Upper side frame smashed
Starter rod bent
Servo tray destroyed
DX7 receiver smashed
Battery pack ripped apart
Landing gear smashed
Fuel tank cracked
1 servo case smashed and the other 3 have lugs broken off and water leaking out!
All servo arms broken (oh apart from one!)

Parts still under investigation and currently sitting on heater -
GY401 Gyro - Slightly damp
S9254 Tail Servo - damp
Revlock 10 - again slightly damp
Voltwatch - dried but not tried
OS37 - will try and run at weekend...
2 Boots and a pair of socks - still drying.

Before i start to play with my new Hirobo Sceadu evo 30 can someone tell me, is this usual for this much damage on a heli for such a low altitude crash? I know i was upside down and i know i ended up in a lake but there is nothing left.... nothing!!! Will the Sceadu cope any better with an impact like this than the Hawk Pro?

I don't know if my bank manager can keep me in heli parts at the rate I am going.

Please someone tell me I am not on my own to make me feel better!

First of all, you're not the only one with bad days. During my time of flying, I had many bad days but also, many good days.

Depending on your head speed, a crash can be devastating with high speeds.

All helis will withstand a certain amount of force but even the helis that are advertised to "take a lickn' and keep on flying", will fall prey to the forces of inertia and gravity.

I assume your engine went in the drink. I would take the head and backplate off immediately and oil everything you can before it rusts.

Update..

Now the dust has settled I have sifted through the wreckage properly I found that I have enough parts from this crash and a previous crash to re-build the mechanics, the only additional parts that I require are lower side frames, servo tray, landing gear and tail boom.

Electrics - tested all electrics and everything working apart from AR7000 receiver which I have just ordered off ebay for £35, bargain!

Servo case's ordered £2.00 each.

Engine stripped and oiled, currently sitting on heater. Thanks for the advice 2LTime

Muffler dents - after speaking to a guy at Midland Helicopters he gave me a bit of advice, fill it full of milk and bung up the ends with some home made bungs then put it in the freezer for a few days. The milk will expand and push the dents out! I will let you know how I get on with this one.

Thought I would do the counter drive shaft bearing mod and paint my spare canopy whilst I wait for the parts.

Wanted - If anyone has a Hawk Torque Tube drive tail boom they don't need then please let me know, also after some better landing gear than standard century stuff.

Initially felt like slinging all the broken parts in the bin and selling everything else but after thinking about it for a day I decided this is not going to beat me and repairing heli's can be just as enjoyable as flying them!

So things are never as bad as they first seem!!

My Raven went in 6mths ago inverted when it flipped unexpectedly in a low hover ie landed on it's head.

My repair bill came to $700 australia $ - so about $550 US.

All I found was more and more damage!!!! Still, my upper and lower frames survived, I haven't heard of many upper century frames breaking, I thought they would have withstanded anything!

Hope you are back up soon

Yeah, it all depends on the landing. I've had MANY crashes with the old Hawk, and sometimes I just pick it up and dust it off, then other times it needs a complete teardown. I don't think the stock landing gear is that bad on the Hawk to warrant looking for a suitable replacement. Even after all my crashes, I'm still going strong with the original landing skids.

Just put a few photo's in my gallery of the damaged parts after strip down.

All back together again now and flying even better than before! I have upgraded a few parts and altogether it has cost me about £100 GBP to get it flying again, not bad considering....but I did have quite a few spares after my first crash which helped!

Will post some pics of finished heli soon, thats if I don't crash it again before I get chance! Maybe I will go and do it now whilst I am thinking about it.

It flys again!!!!

Took it out for a shakedown yesterday and it flys better now that it ever has, all worth it in the end.

Good news!

Usually it's a case of "it will never fly the same again."
