I done some searches, trying to find out what is the best all around
setup for the 550. I think the 1100kv motor seems to work fine, but not sure what is the best battery setup to run with it. It seems that once you go past the stock 890kv motor, you can no longer use the same packs you are using for your 400 size heli.
I bought a used 550 here on RR, and love the way if flies, but the power is nothing short boring, it really does not seem to like multible stationary flips, tic-toc's funnels, and those such of things. So what is the best battery setup to use to get a smile on me face....

Move up to 3200/3300 packs. And go to a longer flybar, like the one off a Trex 600.

I have mine set-up with FP 3200's with Revco gears and a 22t "hard one" pinion. Flew it with both the short-boom and long-boom. Found that the long-boom ended up being more stable thru 3D. I also added the CF Frame stiffeners (from ReadyHeli) and Trex 600 aluminum tail case with gearing and thrust. Rock steady in flight and much quieter. The heli is a rocket at 90% across throttle curve with 4 minutes of hard flight.

dkfuji...

what motor are you running? KV?
do you happen to know what head speed you are getting from your setup?

I also have a set of FP3200s... and a set of FP Evolite 4250s... running a 1000kv motor/ 75a Align ESC through Revco gears / 24t pinion.

I like the Evolites slightly better that the 3200s. They are very close to the same size and weight as the 3200s... work fine providing good amperage to the motor... and give me 1.5 to 2 min more flight time... depending on how hard I am pressing them.

I am running the 1500w 1100kv Silver Bullet motor w/75a Align esc. Headspeed is around 2360. The evolites are great for weight to amp ratio but the burst drain for hard flight may heat them up with the higher torque motor. I have a set of the CF Frames (that will allow different battery pack combo's) and I will be experimenting with different set-ups to see performance vs flight time differences. As it is now, the heli is quick and responsive (like a big V2).

dkfuji - the 4250s come down cool... although I am probaly not flying them as hard as you are. They are rated at 76.5 amp continuous and 119 burst... that should be plenty for your motor.

I also fly a set of FP 3200 30c - and the 4250s are as cool... if not cooler than those.
