I am use to nitro helis I am ready to go electric so what is the purpose of the BEC and ESC. I know what they look like and which ones to get but what are their purpose. I know on nitro birds I never needed them... Thanks sorry for the dumb question......

ESC - Electronic Speed Control, controls the motor from the Rx. Feeds theproper voltage and pulses to the motor to run the speed/power you request.

BEC - Battery Eleminator Circuit. You are already carrying around a battery to run the motor, so why carry another one to power the Rx adn servos. The BEC converts the higher main battery pack voltage down to 5 - 6 volts for your radio equipment. In some larger helis you use a separate 2S lipo pack to run the radio gear with a voltage regulator (sometimes mistakenly called a BEC) to step the voltage down.

Wow!!!! Just what I needed to know.. Thanks Pinecone

One more question..... Since the ESC control the motor speed does the ESC need programing? In other words how does it know what rotor head speed to achieve? Thanks

Two ways.

1) Just like a nitro motor, you set up throttle curves. But with electric they are easier. For Normal I use 0 - 60 - 80 - 90 - 100 to get head speed up for hover.

For Idle 1 I use 100 - 95 - 90 - 95 - 100 and for Idle 2 100 straight across.

2) Many ESC have a governor mode. WIth this you set a flat throttle curve adn check head speed with a tach and tweak teh throttle setting to get what speed you want. Gov throttle should normally be 85 or lower to give some head room for the gov to hold RPM whne you add pitch.
