Main Discussion > Raptor 60 up/down tail vibration

Hi guys,

I'm getting a tail vibration, it's an up/down motion, very quick. I went back and checked the balance on everything, re-greased the feathering spindle. Didn't seem to help. Could it be from running the engine too rich? I'm having a difficult time setting the needles on the TT 70 to run consistently, and I'm thinking about getting the OS 61 carb. I've heard a lot of people that did this switch, and loved it. Thanks

Chris,

Sounds like something out of balance in the tail. Might be the tail rotor shaft or the tail blades.

Before you tear anything else apart, Swap the Main Rotor blades around to the other grips. It stoped mine from the vib you describe and the blades and every thing else was checked first. This was the only cure on mine.
I hope this does for you what it did for me.

Yes sometimes it a weired thing we do to get by.

Christianzx,

Before you drop close to a $100 on a WC carb, try a supertiger 61 carb. It works great on the thudertiger motors and is easy to adjust.

All I can say is it did stop the vertical shake in the tail on my Rappy 60.
I took the TR assy off after checking the TR blades on the Koll. TR assy balanced right on. (taking TR assy off a pain on Rappy60!) Checked the main shaft, feathering shaft, flybar alignment, paddles distance. everything I have come across on this forum and basic physics. Main Blades were dead on... on Koll too. Best set of 680's I have. (SAB 680)
Only thing that stoped the vert was swapping them. Like I said weired.
Kam Wyatt said it was in the head. That's when I finally swaped the blades.

Check your tail boom supports. Make sure the plastic piece has has no play in it, with respect to the tail supports. It solved my problem.

Thanks David! I thought he was with phi or the owner of phi or something?

Seems weird to go from a phi to a raptor 60!

One of the guys at our field finally got the 'wobble' out of his Raptor 60 by adding some additional bearings in the tail boom to support the drive shaft.

I could be wrong as I don't own a R60, but I think the drive tube is made out of aluminum. There's no way something that long can run true with just one bearing in the boom.

I was told buy a friend that flys R60's to do the extra bearing mod on the rappy for that reason. I havent flown it yet but hope to this weekend. Even if that isn't the fix I think it is a good idea anyway to have two bearings on the tube.

raptor vibration

Just had the same problem as you. Add an additional torque tube support in the boom. Space them evenly in the tube and you can even put a little dimple in the bottom of the boom to keep them from moving inside. This was all it took. And yes.... it does cause the up/down vibration you're talking about.

Good Luck

I'll give the extra bearing a shot. Tail is balanced, so I know the problem isn't there.

I'd think that setting the two bearings evenly spaced wouldn't be
a good situation. You could easily setup a harmonic whipping
of the tube in the boom. Offsetting the bearings will prevent that from happening.
