I saw these fly this past weekend in Chicago. Pilot skill notwithstanding, this helicopter is extremely capable, and extremely smooth while doing it. The skill of the pilots only made it all that much better. I'd say that Min Air has a winner on its hands with this bird.

I'm confused why people are so critical on the cloan issue. If one looked at Robert Gorman's cobra or my GMP Legend (flybarless!) it had several Hirobo parts.[1] Whats important is those that make the kits earn enough money to stay in business. One way to protect the intellectual property of the "inventor" is their ability to sell parts to the cloan manufactures and be first to market. That said, there are several intriguing things about the MA 450:

1) full hardened 4mm feathering shaft, with 4mm thrust baring
2) hardened 5mm main shaft
3) one piece motor mount and lower baring block
4) adjustable battery tray tilt.
5) nut plate landing skid attachments
6) 2oz lighter than the Trex

also lets consider crashablity:

1) Stronger main and feathering shaft
2) broken blade grips are replaced without removing feathering shaft
3) good design for nose in impact
4) one piece landing skits collapse completely without breakage

While it uses the beam's clever servo placement, Tim's mounting block and side frames are totally different:

Its quite clear that Tim has designed a few helis, and as we all know parts (and $$) are what makes helis fly. This market will compete on the supply chain just as much as the design. Its an exciting time for 450 helis!! (don't sell the Blade 400 short)

Rob

[1] WOW, have things changed!!! not only has the level of precision in the kits improved, but the level of proficiency of the pilots is humbling! I know its old news to those that have been building kits this year, but let me tell you, Bobby, Nick and Tim are expanding the hobby much more than anyone could have predicted.

I saw the new MA 450 first hand last week and it does have some innovative features not yet found on any 450 I've seen yet. The tail boom will be hard mounted and the idler pulleys will slide for and aft to set belt tension. That will make setting belt tension a snap and will also make it much easier to do other maintenance functions that usually require loosening the tail boom on other 450s. All I can say for the head and control assemblies are that they are really tight. No slop makes for a very stable and predictable 450 and that is what will increase the confidence and wow factor being produced by guys like Bobby and Nick.

Tim is a smart designer and business man with as much or more experience in this market than any others out there and I say that because he has competed at the highest levels of competition. In his day before 3D had been classified he was an excellent FAI pilot and very innovative aerobatic pilot. I can remember seeing him doing maneuvers I had not seen anyone else perform back in the 87, 88 and 89 time frame. I don't think there are any other big manufacturers who have ever flown at a level as high as Tim did. He learned from one of the biggest pioneers in the industry and that was his father Walt Schoonard who will always be remembered for his vision that had a huge part to play in what has brought us to where we are in this hobby today. So many of the pilots today have no idea where it all came from and the leaps that were made. It's so easy to take advantage of the advancements today and that is a testament to what guys like Tim and his late father do for the hobby. I don't know of any other manufacturer who has the historical depth, experience and proficiency as Tim. I'm glad to see MA in the 450 arena and I can't wait to get my hands on the new model. By the way, I wonder what they will call it?

Nicely said.

I am happy to see MA in the 450 class because we have yet to see a 450 sized machine with Miniature aircraft's almost zero slop heads and durability.

At this point I don't think there are any close up pictures.

I have been flying this heli a lot lately and it is really holding up. I love how its like a 90, you built it and its built. I have really stressed it, and so far I havn't had one part wear out yet!!

This helicopter is really flying good! Stays together very well, and is really holding up to several....several flights.

There are some new videos over in the movie section of myself, and a few more of Bobby now.
