I have found a way to convert the hawk from the old school 5mm spindle and no thrust bearings to the larger 6mm spindle thrusted assembly....I know Century sells this kit for 40$..

here it is at heli world.. http://www.heli-world.com/detail.aspx?ID=3857

But I have found a way to replicate it EXACTLY for 14$...including the thrust bearings and spindle...

I converted my hawk and it works great!!!

Pm me if you need part numbers..

well...

Since I already wrote this out...I might as well just post it here and save some time for everyone..

Good luck--------------

Here you go..

okay...so after much experimentation with another heli...I stumbled across these parts and they are exactly the same as century parts..I converted my hawk...

the parts are from a ESKY Esmart heli..SUPER CHEAP..best thing is that replacement spindles are 4$ at BP hobbies...

here are the part numbers..

Spindle # EK5-0323A Steel Spindle ($4)
Radial Bearings (need 2 sets) #686zz(EK5-0393) 2$ a set
Thrust Bearings #F6-12M only need 1 set (7$)

if you don't have the 3d red dampners you should get them there as well...part #EK5-0386B (2.72$)

They are the same as the red century dampners..

Here's a link to the place to get the parts..

Hope this helps and good luck..

I recently converted one of my hawk pros to the 6mm shaft, triple bearing and red dampers. I could not belive the diference it made in cyclic performance.

Spindle upgrade...

This upgrade is definitely worth doing!

The helis flies much better and smoother now...not to mention I am able to crank the headspeed up much higher now

not bad for 14$...

WOW!...

Just flew my Hawk again after doing the spindle upgrade...I have the head spinning about 2100RPMS and it ROCKS!

Great flying little heli .....just have to be REALLY good with collective management if you decide to do 3d flying with a 30

I can't believe how nice this heli flies overall and how stable it is ....I held an inverted hover about 6" off the deck for about 2 minutes almost hands off...

I am about to buy the parts right now!!!
I freaking bent a control rod IN FLIGHT while flying 3D today with my Hawk Pro!

I converted my hawk to 120 degree bellcranked CCPM. The rod tha I bent was from an aileron servo to the bellcrank!

It bent because the grips are binding up when I unload the head (zero pitch) at hi rpm... and I am only flying at 1,750 rpm!

If you run your head over 1900 rpm you should consider replacing the screws that hold the head to the mast and the main gear hub to the mast. I had mine sheered in flight.

Use two long 3mm screw with a long shank, and then shorten the threads, file the end flat. You would usually need to add 1 or 2 washers

This way there are no threads rubbing against metal parts and you have a solid piece of steel at the point of greatest stress.

Hmmm.

Well now they've raised the prices and are out of stock on the radial bearings....

EDIT:
Anybody know of anywhere else to get the E-sky parts needed for the conversion??

Helidirect sells esky parts...

Helidirect sells some of the parts but they don't sell the bearings...Unfortunately I only found them at BP...the spindles are only 3.50$ at helidirect also...

Looks like the hawk guys made a run on them

Okay....so I called Helidirect and BP hobbies ..

After speaking with Both HElidirect and BP hobbies it looks like I convinced Helidirect to Order the upgrade bearings and spindles in quantity...I explained to the guy there(larry) that I had found that these bearings and spindles work in the Hawks so I expect he could sell quite a few if he got them....so if you guys wait a week or 2 helidirect will have the bearings in stock...I know they already sell the spindles for 3.50$ so I would imagine they will sell the bearings much cheaper than BP Hobbies...

BP hobbies did tell me that they have the thrust bearings in stock but the radials are not expected to be in stock for a week or 2..

Hope this helps...

Personally I would wait and get the parts from Helidirect...if you need a 5mm stock Hawk Spindle Helidirect sells them as well in the esky esmart section ..PART #0323....I have 2 or 3 also if someone wants them...

Too late... I already ordered the 6mm spindle and thrust bearings from BP and the total shipped by first class mail was $18.
Now I have ordered the radial bearings off E-bay.. I got 10 bearings for $13 shipped!!

My hawk will be back in the air doing 3D this weekend, I hope!

Sweet!

Not a bad deal at all ...you'll like the performance of the 6mm upgrade with the thrust bearings..

Yeah.. between the strong wind and no thrust bearings, the hawk was a little difficult to keep on track..

ABEC 1

ABEC 1 Bearings are about the cheapest and lowest grade of bearings.

I have had bad luck with tolerances of the ABEC 1's in the past so I now try to get at least ABEC 3 if possible...but ABEC 1 bearings would be just fine in the grips and spindle..

The only place I would really worry about having an Excellent quality ABEC 3 or better bearing in is the tail and the main shaft.

That's just my opinion though..
