mliu, where did you live in NP? I was right across the street from Amgen at Hillcrest Park. I lived there for 3 years and worked down the hill at Pt. Mugu NAS.

Chris

After 12.5yrs away from Heli's I'm Back?

Hello all,
This is a great BBS!! I have to report that I received my hummingbird last Wed 2-19-03. I bought the combo w/JR Quatro Lite. The packaging is great. The heli is completely built except for the radio gear. FYI you have to read/take the directions with a grain of salt.....and as I did will have to make some minor mods to get your radio gear in neatly. I did at first think there was a problem with my skids, the left side is about 1cm taller then the right. After talking with a century tech I was told that it's intensional to counteract the rotor torque in GE. FP's really don't like GE (so I'm told) I did have a small problem I took the heli into the living room to get her light on the skids and do some trimming. I brought the head up to speed and just as it started to get light my wife yelled to me from the kitchen. I throttled down and stuct my head in the kitchen to see what see wanted and just then the heli went full throttle (no input from me) lifted off (beautifully, striaght) pegged to the ceiling (inches from my running ceiling fan) then came down slowly and clipped my oak piano bench. I thought for sure I'd be picking up many pieces. Supprisingly only 1 main blade broke. So now I'm waiting for a replacement set from century and am curious as to why the glitch happened in the first palce. all I've come up with is that from my nitro heli exp. I always kept the throttle trim lowered until I started the heli. I did the same thing with the HB. Since the Crash I've noticed that with the trim lowered sometimes the ESC does not shut down and you can hear a whinning noise comming from it, Sometimes the blades will continue to spin slowly and some times just the noise. BUT with the trim centered.....NO Problems.....make any sence to you e-heli veterans? I'll report more on the performance as soon as the blades arrive (middle of the week)

sorry for rambling but I thought some of you might be hungry for some info!

regards,
Ant

Humingbird or Piccolo?

Is this just a new marketing ploy by Century for selling piccolo as Humingbird? Besides the canopy other stuff seems identical to Ikarus Piccolo.. anyone sees the different of this heli?

I got to fly the hummingbird at the Pasadena show and the heli flew great. I think it flies batter then the piccolo. The hummingbird is durable to. One of the other guys crashed one and I look at it and it was not hurt. My 2 cents.

As a side note, many of the mods for the Piccolo ( such as the CNC Swashplate ) will work on the Hummingbirds ...

With Proper Mods the Piccolo CP Head should work just fine work ...
All that you would need to do is change the linkage length and main shaft length ...

Always glad to help,

Gyro Issue

I built my Hummingbird on the day they started shipping, I am lucky and live near Milpitas so I picked it up. Lucky too because I soon found (2) problems. First the Hummingboard wouldn't recognize the receiver signal. Second the tail rotor would not operate. After changing every part in the dam thing, Peter at Century took the critter in as a personal project. Turns out there were a number of gyros maufactured that won't operate with certain recievers. Mine did't like the MPS receiver in the combo pack. They changed it out and all is well.

It flys well although I think the doubleback tape on the servo mounting allows to much loss in torque resuleing in reduced travel and control. I am going to re-engineer that. Anyone got suggestions?

Dam the thing is tough. At least 20 hard (some very hard) landings and still running on all the original parts. (Just a touch of JB weld as needed)

Flyboy,

What was the total cost of setting up the Hummingbird? I assume you're using a radio you already own. You've mentioned an $11 battery but what else did you have to buy?

Thanks,
C.P.

I know that the kit is $279.00, the combo kit with all the electronics, you will need a Crystal for the radio(that I already had) $8.50 and I got three extra batteries.@11.99 each
They sell a complete kit with everthing you need to get airborne with either the hitec laser $314.99 or JR quatro $324.95or some other four channel radio. This last kits comes with Everytrhing you need to get airborne.
Call helicopter world or go to their web site @ www.heli-world.com

I think the question was that you paid 79.99 and he wanted to know how much you paid for all the radio gear, gyro and anything else you needed.

Sorry for the confusion....

I have my own radio.

I know the bird itself is only $79
Batteries $11

What other must haves?
Flight pack (2 servos?)
Any special electronics required? (speed controller etc.)

Stuff like that. And yes, I'll check out their web site as well.

Thanks,
C.P.
