UAV Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles > Helicommand Issue

I'm having an issue with the Helicommand stabilizer that I'm using on my camera ship (Vario Gasser). The helicopter seems to get randomly unstable without any setting modifications. Is like the stabilizer is doing it's job smoothly sometimes compared to a more agressive way other times (70% of the time) in any of the stabilizing modes (positioning - which I rarely use & horizontal).
I tried to reduce the gain from 80% (decreasing the travel on AUX3 channel on my JR 8310 radio) in small increments down to 60%, but no results. Actually, I almost haven't see any difference.
I would really appreciate any suggestions or help.
Thanx a lot !

Hi Paul,

2 possibilities:

i) Older firmware release - running a PPM receiver w/o digital signal processing? The HC falls into short holds under certain circumstances.
-> firmware upgrade

ii) I observed a strange and unexplainable interference between GAIN for an external tail gyro (ch 5) and PILOT (ch 8) of the HC (SANWA/Airtronics PCM - RD8000, SANWA receiver). Checking the color of HC's status LED and having 85% set on gyro gain the pilot value flickered and so the mode of the HC between OFF and HOR. After changing GAIN down to 50 or 60% the effect disappeared.
Yes , you name it: Strange!

Why don't you give it a try w/o the PILOT cable connected - HC getting its PILOT value from the default setting (PC software)?

Tom

Oops, I was wrong: Observed that w/ a PPM receiver WITH digital postprocessing (ACT DSQ8) - did not check it yet in another installation w/ PCM.

...

Thank you Tom for your feedback !

I’m actually using a PCM receiver. What I don’t have is the data cable that intend to buy sometimes soon.
No, I haven’t try to use it without the pilot channel. What should be the values of the gain and what is the default mode (horizontal or positioning) without the pilot cable?
Have you try to fly the helicopter this way ?

Thank you again!

Try to set your gain start form 20% and step up 5% each time until you feel comfortable on the stabilization.
I guess 80% or 60% is little bit too high.

Paul, default is POS 70% - that is 70% HOR w/o pattern recognition by the camera. Better to cover the camera.
You'd urgently need the cable.
