BEAUTIFUL !!!

It's not very often we get to see some fantastic well built scale models come together!! Thank you for taking the time to post this build!! You are in an Elite Group of Scratch builders and should be Proud!! I am in awe!

Fantastic model!

Like others have mentioned, it's impressive to see something built from scratch and imagination!

I've been kicking around ideas for a Fairey Rotodyne, but I'm still trying to get my head around some of the technical issues...

Thanks everyone, I do enjoy building challenging projects which is half the battle in getting these things done.

Rodan, yes I have often looked at the Rotodyne, the problem is torque control with the original using tip propulsion, I had thought about using a couple of small ducted fans within the fuselage, they woudlnt be too obtrusive. The rest of the project in terms of switching to aeroplane mode wouldnt be too challenging with the right TX/RX mix

Jim Morley made a glow-engined one-off model of the Fairey Rotodyne. It used 60 size mechanics modified to use two, four-bladed tail rotors which were located in the place of the propellers of the original aircraft. One tail rotor being configured as a pusher and the other a tractor to provide sufficient torque control with the vastly shortened tail booms. The design could obviously only fly purely as a helicopter and was unable to disengage power to the main blades and autorotate in forward flight.

I was lent a video made at the time, which covered an overview of the design and mechanics as well as some airborne footage. I can't recall what year this was but somewhere around the early/mid 90s I think.

Oh, and I'm really impressed with the KA22 - a fantastic and unusual project!

For the Rotodyne, I have been thinking about using electric motors in the wings to each drive a four blade tail rotor mechanism. If I can figure out the radio programming, the variable pitch should be able to provide torque compensation for flight with the main rotor engaged, and forward thrust for flight in gyroplane mode.

Two of the main concerns are the effectiveness of the "props" for torque control with the shorter moments, and the efficiency of a tail rotor blade as a propeller for forward flight...

As Coolrunnin noted, the Rotodyne can be built as a straight heli, or a straight gyroplane, and while challenging technically, it's attainable. The really challenging aspect is to duplicate the original's ability to take off vertically under power.

Thanks for getting me thinking on this again with your fantastic project! I even came up with a nutty idea for tip jet propulsion for the main rotor last night... I have to do some research, but I don't think it's going to be practical...

BTW, in reference to stability of the heli, you might take a look at this thread on weighting the Align wooden blades:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=836351

This made a tremendous improvement in stability when using the multi-blade heads on my scale TRex in a standard heli configuration. Given the light overall weight, the additional stability in the rotor discs may benefit your project as well.

What a great project! Thanks for taking the time to share your process with us. It has clearly given others some motivation to try something a little out of the box.. Keep us posted!

Latest update, video shows the problem I have with pitch oscillation but ultimately I will cure it, getting better all the time -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HjTnjF-P6k

Made one of the nacelles in GF, other one to do then I can paint -

What I am aiming for plus some alterations to cover mechanics -

Started with a clay model of the rough shape -

After taking a plaster cast of the model I made a car body filler plug and refined the shape -

Made a parting board -

Completed a 3 piece moould -

Then cast very lightweight covers -

Completed -

Also designed and made a transport system, holds all the blades in place and acts as a carrying handle -

I have bought a CPD4 to assist keeping the heli level although I am still convinced its just a matter of trial and error with the myriad of settings in the micro controller.
