How many of you have gone inverted without hitting idle up first

Runway? what runway??

Me.

I've since gotten rid of normal mode completely.

How do you start your heli??....or if electric - spool up from a dead stop?

It's electric with a governor and with slow-start.

I did have just normal mode for a few days, and it didn't seem to be a problem. Now I have matched pitch curves, with 0-50-20-20-20 for normal mode. I spool up to 50% then flick idle-up. Part of my problem was that when I flick throttle hold, my tx uses the 'normal mode' curves by default. But it means there's no chance of me taking off in the wrong mode by accident.

stationary flip, right on the deck! Crashed it. I have done a loop in normal mode, works fine for a fast power on loop.

Yes

My first crash was from not going to Idle Up 2. I had just put new blades and a new muffler and I was retuning the engine. I was going up, testing it, then bringing it back down to change the needle valve. When I thought I had it right I went up and decided to go inverted. Fortunately I was pretty high and I thought the engine had just cutout. So I flipped it back over and put in full down to get the blade speed up (I thought maybe I had lost blade speed being inverted and flipping it back upright) as I approached the ground I opened the throttle back and the thing jumped back to life and scared the heck out of me so I inadvertantly cut throttle then opened it again and landed. It would have been an ok landing but the new blades hit the ground. Very minor damage, about $30.00 worth (new flybar and main shaft). I kept using the blades, they were carbon and never seemed damaged and I flew them much after that.

i went to do an inverted departure one day and quickly figured out i was going to run out of AAI. (Altitude, Airspeed, and Ideas) i rode it out as the head and tail blades were skimming the stuble in the field. It reminded me of a damn playing card on a glass table-top. It retained enough energy to get upright and the headspeed came back up as it was dropping stuble!

Now i ALWAYS check the idle up switch position!

Bummer...

I think everyone has done that maneuver at least once. I know when i don't fly consistently I do it all the time. The most important thing is not to panic, zero the pitch and hit idle up as soon as you hear it bog. You should always be able to save it as long as you don't panic.

heck sometimes i fly in normal mode and do big loops and rolls, just got to remember not to hold inverted to long.

only you have the power to make no difference!

Been there, Did that.

I flew in the sun and lost orientation.
When I saw it again it was inverted.
But I was still in the wrong mode.
It slowly when to the ground. I was learning inverted then and was not bright enough to switch flymodes.
An inverted landing, did not even break the blades
Just a bent shaft, flybar and tail.

I have completed more than one flip in normal mode.

But then there were those two occasions where I was not so successful(lucky).

I'd rather be flying

Normal mode is evil
Idle up is good
I match all my flight modes and as soon as the governor kicks in, I go to idle-1 up on ground... Why bother with Normal at all unless you are scale flying?

Of course warn anyone who flies your chopper... They could do some massive damage if they do a 'chop the throttle' in normal mode with full linear flight curves...

Just program your tx with a flat 50% pitch curve in normal. The problem is solved.

i always flip into idle up on the ground and then put negative pitch just to make sure... i learned that from most pros ive seen

been there, done that. my last bad crash was from the same thing, started a low flip, went negative with the stick only to find out i was still in normal mode...ouch.

Done it myself one time - once it all it takes to make sure you don't do it again. Its all part of the fun.

It's interesting how many people have done this. Enough good helis lost that... 'normal mode' ceases to look like a good idea (to me). But having done it myself, you're all making me feel slightly better.

Just for the sake of argument, I prefer to have a throttle curve of:

0-60-20-20-20

for 'normal' mode with linear pitch curves. It means that when you're spinning up, you naturally tend to leave the heli with slight negative pitch at the point where you flick on idle-up. You can just about check tracking on 20% throttle (at least preliminary checks). I keep the linear pitch curves in order to help me if I need to setup the head.

If you have a flat 50% pitch cuve, my concern is that you might flick on idle-up whilst you still have a smidgeon of positive pitch.
