e-E-Flite Blade CP CX 400-3D > Different Tail Rotor Blade Options...

Here are the different tail rotor blade options that I have trialed:

Left to Right in photos:
1. Stock Tail . . . 2. GWS 4530 . . . 3. 4030 . . . 4. 3020

My Notes (other people's experience may vary):

1. Stock Tail
I have used the stock tail with:
  • stock main motor (with & without G90 HH gyro)
  • stock main motor with advanced timing (with G90 HH gyro)
  • brushless main motor (with G90 HH gyro)
Flight Characteristics
  • good fit for anyone learning to fly
  • adequate for hovering and FF (including loops and rolls)
Pros / Cons
. . . + cheap
. . . - motor burns out (a function of the motor required)
. . . - not suitable for advanced flying
. . . - very large diameter easily hits the ground

2. GWS 4530 Prop Direct Drive<== My current preference!
I have used the GWS 4530 prop with:
  • GWS Direct Drive Tail conversion [GW/EDP-50H] Here for more info
  • Feigao 1208436L 12x30mm Brushless Tail Motor
  • without and with a brushless main motor (with G90 HH gyro)
Flight Characteristics
  • best flight characteristics / tail holding
  • good for all flight requirements, small amount of tail movement on hard collective requirements
Pros / Cons
. . . + cheap (brushed version)
. . . + good ground clearance (smaller diameter)
. . . - requires tail adapter that will bend in a hard tail crash
. . . - tail motor runs a little hotter due to size of prop
. . . - brushed motor burns out - not as fast as stock tail
. . . - brushed motor known to ignite for small percentage of users
. . . . . ( Here or Here for more info. Probably a function of the ESC being used...?)
. . . . . (obviously brushless motors do not have these brushed motor problems)
3. 4030 Press-On Prop Direct Drive
Note: I am not positive this is a 40 pitch prop - pitch not marked on prop
Edit: Confirmed it is a 30 pitch.

I have used the 4040 prop with:
  • Feigao 1208436L 12x30mm Brushless Tail Motor
  • brushless main motor (with G90 HH gyro)
Flight Characteristics
  • really good flight characteristics / tail holding
  • good for all flight requirements, minimal amount of tail movement on hard collective requirements
Pros / Cons
. . . + does not use adapter, so not as likely to bend in a crash
. . . + good ground clearance (smaller diameter)
. . . + tail motor runs cool
. . . - responsiveness a little slower than 4530 prop (not as much thrust)
3. 3020 Press-On Prop Direct Drive
I have used the 3020 prop with:
  • Feigao 1208436L 12x30mm Brushless Tail Motor
  • brushless main motor (with G90 HH gyro)
Flight Characteristics
  • really good flight characteristics / tail holding
  • good for all flight requirements, minimal amount of tail movement on hard collective requirements
Pros / Cons
. . . + does not use adapter, so not as likely to bend in a crash
. . . + best ground clearance (smallest diameter)
. . . + tail motor runs cool
. . . - responsiveness a little slower than 4530 and 4040 prop (not as much thrust)

4040

Hey tutelar are there any other numbers on that prop? I found this but it does not look right.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dear God, please let it set down just as it took off. Amen.

I got it as part of a motor close-out sale from BP Hobbies. Description is
"Hobby Electronics 1230 Motor Set - CLOSEOUT SALE "
"Also comes with two dark orange propellers (83mm and 100mm)."

Check it out here...

Please note that I have changed my preference to the 4530 prop... it just holds better.

Now I need to find a source for a 4530 prop with a 1.5mm shaft diameter, so I can use it as a press-on.

Thanks. Been thinking about trying the 4530 instead of 3020. I think I stayed away from it due to its brushed motor killing power. Pretty sure my BL is up for the job.

Dear God, please let it set down just as it took off. Amen.

I think I found some press-on prop adapters for you

Micro: Thanks! I will probably try them, since I really like the performance of the 4530 tail.

For anyone who wants to trial the 4030 tail, BP Hobbies e-mailed me back with this link...

tutelar, will be thursday or friday until I get back to you on that. In my intial tests several months ago I found that both the 4530 and 3020(had to be drilled out to be used with the prop adapter) seemed to work better with the additional space between the prop and the tail boom. They also operated quieter. I never did use the grub screws that came with the 4530 and prop adapter kit(can you say beyond poor quality). I used the phillips head screws and blue loctite and I am now using hex(allen type with the blue loctite) just my preference. It has never came loose(even in UFBF unbelieveably fast backward flight but, that could be due to the G90 washing out). I have bent it from crashing several times. I just straighten it out. Several of those peeled the prop blades off clean just as you mentioned. I cannot believe how the TB9 and Bl Ammo 4110 just keep going.

Dear God, please let it set down just as it took off. Amen.

Has anyone ever tried a prop saver...? This has the advantange of adapting the size, and perhaps preventing a bent shaft.

Available for a 1.5mm shaft here...

4530

Swapped the 3020 to 4530. Backed off the gyro gain 6 clicks(wagged like crazy with the 3020 settings) and the 4530 worked great. Tail kicks out less so it just feels better. The temps around here are cooperating(65F with a cool breeze) so the Ammo 4110 was just warm after 7 mins. I will have to try it with some warmer temps(darn I hate these tests). For now I'd have to say I prefer the 4530. If it was 100+(like it is quite often around here) my answer might be 3020.

Dear God, please let it set down just as it took off. Amen.

Just a thought - Our prop preferences may be tied to our gyro preferences - Someone might experiment with not just different props but different prop/gyro combos too and perhaps discover that a prop that performs well with one gyro may not perform as well with a different gyro - I happen to be quite satisfied with my GY401/3020 combo so I don't know how motivated I'd be to play around with other prop/gyro combinations right now myself as it'd just be out of simple curiosity for me - But I can say that I've tried the 3020 with 3 different gyros and the G90 was the lowest-end gyro and my least favorite

That said I think G90/prop combo comparison is more useful to the majority of readers as it's the most likely gyro owned by BCP owners because it's the
E-flite recommended gyro/upgrade and cheapest of the gyros I own myself

Micro:

You should try the 4530 prop (if you haven't already). The 3020 holds well, the responsiveness of the 4530 just seems a little quicker.

Perhaps that is caused by the bigger prop requiring less change in rpm to make required torque change to the heli...

I would be really interested your feedback on the tail.

Gyro

The G90 in the weakest link in my ship. I have posted on different occasions how it is inconsistant with high temps outside(90+). I was hopeing to try the GY401 in the next few weeks not sure if that is going to happen. That said with BCPP BL main and tail G90 and 4530 prop seems to work the best with my current weather about 70 degrees. Hot weather the 3020 seemed to be my best option. My guess is that the wierdness during hot weather of the G90 is only maginified by a bigger prop(4530). All in all I am very pleased with my BCPP.

Dear God, please let it set down just as it took off. Amen.

Try the EP-3030 with the Medusa 4000kv 12mm and a 401. It is not possable for the tail to hold any better then that. It holds like my Trex. And im running all the best stuff on my Trex.

The GWS 4025 prop has a 4mm hole for the prop shaft - so NO it is not press-on.

The normal shaft diameter (brushed and brushless) is 1.5mm. A press-on prop typically has either a 1.3 or 1.4 mm hole...

You can get these two items to be able to use a 4mm diameter prop:

Total cost = $3.75
