Hello. I just finished building my first r/c helicopter! Just turned on the servos and have one question: When I increase or decrease the main throttle, I understand that the pitch will proportionally vary on the main rotor and that is normal. But, the rudder pitch also varies as I increase / decrease main throttle? Is this normal? If not, how do I change this? Thanks.

tail rotor problem

Depending on what type of gyro you're using, this could be normal.
The effect is called "REVO" mix or short for "ANTI-TORQUE". When your main rotor spins faster, it creates more torque. The tail-rotor is on the heli to combat torque.

If you are using a so-called Heading-hold gyro, then you must turn off the Revo function on your radio. If you are using a mechanical or plain old piezo gyro with no heading hold feature, then the Revo mix is used to combat torque. You'll have to experiment with it both climbing and descending to set it properly, but your radio manual probably gives you an idea of where to start.

Good luck and keep asking until you get it straightened out.

Thanks for your quick reply. This phenomena is irrelivent of the gyro. If the gyro is bypassed, this still happens. If the gyro is hooked up through the circuit, there is about a 1 second delay (throttle and main rotor pitch vary) and then a second later the rudder kicks in. Sorry I forgot to mention this earlier.

You probably have the revo mix enabled in your radio. You might want to turn that off specially if you're planning on using your gyro in heading hold mode.

Ford,

Thanks for your reply. You hit the nail on the head! It was as simple as turning off the Revo Mix on the transmitter.

Thanks!

well...if it's not heading hold.....

as frollo said, it is normal, don't disable if u r using a gyro without heading hold (hh). If u r using a gyro with heading hold u are right to disable it, if not u want it on. U need to make sure it adds the pitch to the tail blades in the right direction, to counteract the torque produced by adding throttle.
