UAV Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles > Honeywell MAV: Not quite a heli, but close?

This looks interesting - kinda like the foam-ring-thing sold back in the seventies (forgot the name of it) - but better. Maybe I can talk my boss into buying one to 'test' (gotta evaluate what the competition is doing, right?)

Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups.

A most un-impressive noise machine. I had the chance to witness one of those contraptions "fly", and I had to cover my ears. It hovers just fine, but tell it to go somewhere, it get's all weird. No payload of any consequence, either.

I agree, for the amount of money DARPA has given Honeywell to design those things, it is not all that impressive. A mobile fuel to noise converter.

The advantages with ducted fan VTOL's is they can fly closer to people without an exposed rotor, they're simpler than full swashplate/tilt/teeter rotors, they could probably survive more crashes, they could transition to faster forward flight. The ducted fan is still notoriously inefficient compared to an exposed rotor. Still waiting for someone to make one out of a gas turbine.

Noting down some of the other ducted fan VTOL's.
