I am currently running amsoil at 50:1 with the needles set at 1 3/8 on the low and 1 1/4 on the high with NGK BMR7A sparkplug as per Bill’s article suggests. I have adjusted both needles many times to their extremes and have little improvement. My most significant improvement was from 25:1 to 50:1.

My gyro is set to 80% and that seems to be best. My tail doesn’t hunt and stays where I put it. When the tail is getting hits, of course the gyro is trying to solve that movement so we get that little shimmy going on and that translates to the camera poorly.

Should I do 75:1 or even 100:1? Because I carry a load, I’m not sure how hard on the engine that would be.

Here is a link to some video I shot this morning to display this issue.

Thanks in advance,

Jim,
Like you said, you notice improvement from 25:1 to 50:1.... Now try 64:1...I can tell you now, that the old puh engines like you have only like 85:1 with the old carb (167A)....They like 64:1 with the new carb...
Do this, just go 85:1, if you are still seeing side to side shake, lean your lowend to 1 1/4...If its still there, add some pitch at hover to put a little more load on the engine...If your already hovering where you want on the stick, then you will need to adjust the throttle also...
Only concern yourself with hover, not coming up to speed..Your still a little rich, but I want you to see the effect the oil has on the combustion at rich settings...You may have to go leaner on the low since your using the box muffler....It has less backpressure than most...Leave your high where it is...

Thanks Bill, I just got done mixing the 85:1.

I'll fly tomorrow and post the results. I appreciate the help, Bill.

Big difference visible already. There is still a little wag but it started raining a little so I’ll try adding more pitch and if that doesn’t remove it, I’ll lean the low a little more after the rain quits.

When I’ve got as much removed as possible, I’ll post a in-flight video because that really shows the hit.

Thanks Bill

Ok, I added a little pitch and leaned out the low a little. There is still a little hit going on. I'm at 85:1 and the high needle is still at 1 1/4.

From the video, if you ignore my stick movements, you can see the hit or shimmy. I can almost hear it in the motor too.

What's next? The tail hit is a lot better now with the new ratio but I'm hoping to remove that tail hit completly.

Ok, lean the low a little more 1/32 at a time...Are you flying it around after each adjustment to clear the engine?, if not, do so....

How much time do you have on this engine?

I've got about 12 gallons through this engine. I do fly the heli around before I judge a carb setting.

Ok we'll lean the low a little at a time. Leave the high at 1 1/4, right? Thanks Bill

Yes, leave the high where it is....You can go 1 1/8 on the low...That is far as I would go...

If it still does it then, we need to look at your throttle mechanical setup and throttle curve...
