Benny, Justin's dad, will surely report the details here soon. He's a good guy, an up-front guy, and will no doubt give an honest account of what happened.

repost from rcgroups so you can read it

This is pretty long for a 'first post' but I was at the NEAT fair when the crash occured- in fact, I had been standing exactly where the heli hit the ground not more than 3 minutes prior to the crash. I was standing not more than 10 feet from the impact site. I am not an outdoor flier- I went with a friend who is. What follows are just my observations:
1) Justin had the heli under excellent control.

2) There was a lot of traffic- on two occasions Justin put the heli on the ground and waited while other traffic took off.

3) About 10-15 minutes before the crash, there was a PA announcement regarding an non-impounded transmitter being detected.

4) The distance from the flight line to the fence is 20-25 feet.

5) The sequence of events of the actual crash are as follows: A) Justin has the helicopter in hover near the ground, about 15-20 feet away from him. B) The heli lifted and decribed a flat arc directly towards the crowd and crashed about 5 feet past the fence. This all happened in 2-3 seconds.

6) When I saw the heli was headed my way, I ran about 15 feet and turned to see where it was. It looked like it hit an older gent (who appears to be Justins' grandfather, but that is speculation) but it may have been debris that hit him. Hard to say. The heli crashed not more than 8 feet from his chair.

I cannot emphasize how quickly this all happened- the heli was incredibly fast and I don't see how anyone could have recovered it in time to avoid a disaster.

Why the heli went out of control is anyone's guess.

Again...not my post..I was not there.. I heard about it through one of the major manufacturers and reported it.

I'm hearing now from a reliable source that the gentleman's injuries were not serious -- a couple stitches on a cut on his forehead, a couple other scratches and some bruises. Thank goodness. He's being treated at a local hospital and should be released tomorrow.

The gentleman apparently was not related to the Chi family. He was in his chair when Justin's heli crashed near him, as reported above.

I know there will be people blaming this on his age, and that sucks because it could have happened to anyone. Also glad to hear no one was seriously injured (although that is pretty serious)

I'm kinda on the fence about a 5yr. old flying but I saw the kid fly at ircha and he did have pretty good skills.
And if you think about it, the two crashes with injuries at ircha were from adults, one who flew so close to himself he crashed into himself, and the other was a bystander who was taking pictures too close to the flight line when another adult pilot crashed and he got hit by the heli.

So, if safety rules don't have to be followed by the adults, why the uproar about the kids age when he crashes?

The guy who flew to close to himself, I havent seen one post on RR about how unsafe that was, let alone the fact that pilot was not only risking his own life showing off, but also the lives of all the people around him. But because he is a freind to most, we just chalk it up as an
"accident"

I just read that link,
kind of brutal, when a little kid with some mad skillzs {but still a little kid}
crashes, all of a sudden the roar on the internet is ready to ban without knowing the facts of why he crashed?

Who knows, maybe it was pilot error, but maybe it wasn't.

If safety isn't suported and enforced better, it will only be a matter of time before more people get hurt or worst.
And the example needs to be led by the top pilots, those guys are really the ones setting the example for the rest.

Flame suit on.

Fwiw..
I've see Justin fly, and I wish the Factory hot dogs would follow his example as far as safe flying goes..This event is what I fear, as equipment failure or lockout turns the best pilot into a spectator..
I'm really thankful the injuries weren't worse, but how long can we expect our luck to hold....

If this had been in the UK that display would not meed BMFA requirements for safe distance, for models less than 7KG it is required that there be at least 30m between the crowd and the flying, and 60m above 7KG.

25ft + 15-20ft is way under this, displays seem to be being flown closer than is really safe, distance = time.

i think we are going to see more accidents in the future as this hobby becomes more accessable to more people.... there are gonna be cowboys out there who wont take safety factors into account...
