I Have a hobbico Torqmaster 90 12v starter with two batteries. They are 7.2V @ 2000 mAh each. What kinda Volts can this starter take? After 5-8 starts it seems like the batteries die out and I know this shouldn't be happening they are new but the cheap ones(Tower Hobbies)!!I do have them wired in a series for the most punch!! I am starting a Raptor 50 with a hyper!! Any help would be great !! Thanks

I ran one like that on 22volts. You have about 15v on a freshly peaked pack, which should start a 50 all day. Do you have a charger that can cycle the packs and show their condition, such as a Triton?

Yes, That's what I use to charge them with!! That's what I thought it should start it all day long!!

Thanks Ed

Maybe you have too big of a starter draining those batts. I used one 7.2 to start my hyper and it was plugged into a $19 starter I bought at HobbyPeople in San Diego ten years ago. Still works fine. I'm guessing that big starter has no problem with your 50, it just takes a bit of juice to spin it.

The starters are designed for 12V and I would not use more than two 7.2V packs. Use some quality connectors like power poles or deans if applicable. I get two days of flying (2 gallons of fuel on 90s) before charging them up. Running the packs down will destroy them.

I used to screw with starters and had the same battery probs. I've been using an 18 volt cordless DeWalt drill for years and it starts it fine. I never had the need for a one way start shaft either.

I have a torquemaster running on two 12V 4Ah lead acids. I normally use them in parallel and charge about every 4-5 gallons flying 50's. When it floods or I help with someone's 90's I put them in series, 24V, and screams, lots of power, but nothing bad so far. It seems to be able to handle it no problem.

If you can't learn to do it well, learn to enjoy doing it badly.
