I know this will sound stupid but... how in the world do you remove the cup from a Sullivan Hi-Tork starter?

It unscrews! I have had luck spinning the starter in the correct direction on 12V, than grabbing the cone hard. There is no good way I have figured out to immobilize the shaft.

If you can't learn to do it well, learn to enjoy doing it badly.

The cup is threaded on. The bolt may have some locktite on it. You can try applying some heat.

The last one I removed I used the spin method. Let it spin up first and then grab it with your hand using a heavy leather work glove to protect your hand. Do not stall the starter. Just keep grabbing it while it's spinning and it will eventually break free.

On the two previous one I removed I just grabbed the shaft with a pliers and the cone and twisted it off. The best way to grab the cup is to use a rubber strap wrench available at Sears and I suspect most auto stores. Since I got the strap wrench it's come in handy for other items around the house.

Hey Bob,
read the following http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t339978p2/
and you will see they are known for being locked on tight with some sort of thread lock....

I ran into this once and luckily I was all alone at the field!!

reason I say luckily is because I looked like the biggest goofball working on getting it loose....I used to fix F-15's in the AF and unscrewing that cap is on par with some of the more difficult tasks on the F-15...

here is what I did....I got a deepwell socket....and ratchet

and the biggest pair of pliers I coul
