e-HeliDirect HDX 300-600 > HDX 500 verdict

So, what's the verdict on the HDX 500? I don't hear much about them, but I'm looking for a heli about that size, or a Hurricane. What are the owner impressions of the HDX500?

The hdx500se is a great heli. So far the only problems I have had is getting the gearing right. First few flights the head speed was crazy. Just put a good gyro and tail servo and its a winner.

So there's only one person out there happy with the HDX500?

I would like to hear more HDX 500 testimony also. My HDX 450 SE is great. You cant beat the ratio of great parts quality and super performance capabilities to the low cost. I've been so satisfied with the 450 that it only seems natural to go for the HDX 500.

I guess we can keep waiting. Surely there are some 500 owners out here.

[B]After 12 months of having the HDX 500se I can happily say that this heli is one of the best things that has happened to me in this hobby.
The heli is real easy to build and alot of fun to fly. When I first saw the heli 12 months ago I only found a few posts on forums about this heli and most were positive. This baby has alot to offer in both entry level to advanced flying. I think the size of the heli was a draw card for me as well being a fairly un tapped market in the 500 class. It only took a few tiny mods to turn this good heli into a great heli. I can only say if your a newby as I was do yourself a favour and get one, you won't be disappointed. Thankyou to all the staff @ helidirect. I have three of these RTF in my hangar, all with different setups from the standard HDX to the full on 3D heli.
Oh, I forgot to mention this heli will grow with your flight experience and price you can't match. Thanks for your time guys.
I'll be sticking with HDX in the future and happy autoing

I'm sold, lol. How much did the fine people at Heldirect pay you for that testimony? J/k... I will probably go with the HDX500SE.

Thanks

HDX500SE

Setup:

Stock motor with 8xxkv
425mm CF Stock Blades
TP 4s3850 pack
Sonic 60a ESC/BEC
Weight 4lb

Due to the heavy disc loading the heli felt heavy in the air. This is both good and bad depending on the users perspective.

For biginner to intermediate pilots will absolutely love this heli. This heli is very stable even in the breeze. Due to higher disc loading, it requires higer head speed to maintain hover and it feels very solid.

For the all out 3D pilot, it is not the machine in the stock form. The cyclic, although slow, is very precise and shows potential. Due to disc loading, it does not feel nimble and cyclic is very slow. We will replace the stock motor with more efficient variety to allow 4s3300 and try to get 4min flight time. This along with few measures to reduce the weight will improve the disc loading. There were few redundant frame spacers which was taken out along with the receiver tray and foam taped the receiver on the side of the frame.

Hyperion H3025-10 and a mega motor rc600/30/5 will be tested soon.
The problem at the moment is the availability of pinions other than 24T.

While testing, 2 main gears were stripped during spool up. This was all within 6 flights.

Since we got this heli to do 3D flying, we'll be modifying few things to achieve our goal and the result will be posted here.

Readyheli sells pinions of other sizes ranging from 18 to 24 teeth. They are from revco 0.6 I have tried the 18 20 and 22t pinions all meshed perfectly.

I believe HD is working on a 150T main. This should open more options in terms of motors.

A 150 tooth pinion or man gear? I don;t think I have ever seen a small electric motor spin a pinion that large.

hdx 500

Hi guys
I gotta it.
I buy the normal one firth (I was warry about one more lost of money) and after some fly and different test I trust in it and I buy the metal head and the metal tail.
Before go foward I need inform that I like 3d fly, I fly 450 4s with neu motor (700W) 600 E and nitro with YS rappy90 carbin extreme head, than for me hely MUST be fast and quick.
The firth fly with the 500 with A3012kl and 5s 3300 22t the max head speed was 2800, STD blade (rotor and tail)... +/- 12 and 6 in the plate..... My firth feeling was silent, stable, but slowwwww...

God oor maybe excellent for people that want fly, make a gentle 3d... than I start make change.....
6s 2200 18T , speed was over 3200!!! than I slow dow at 3000, mah 425 blade and century tail blare 70mm, metal head, metal tail, mmmmmmmmm sounds better, but not enoght, thubles and roll are slowww compare at 450 or at 600.
I try change paddles (i try the gorilla 450 ligh padle) no change same, better maybe but slow, but with this new setting tic toc and rambow are ok.
Now I work in the head, they have some thinks that they don't copy from the 600 head, I wand move in the seasaw mixer arms and mlake longer fly bar (+50mm firth and see), also I find a desing error in the flybar control set, infact the stabilizer control linkage bind and they limitate the plate angel travel, I will make a small change and use the 600 desing.
One other metters, the head come with the main blade linkabe controll in right position rispect the blade rotation, in the manual they show in the left.... I try both no change in fly but like the instruction they have binding problem, I advise the set like align.

Ok Guys, my final impression, is ok, very stable perfect size, actually good rapport cost/quality, fly exactly like Hirobo, but 50% cheeper.
In tghe next week I will make the missing change, and I wish to get more minble 3d and enjoy like a creazy.

PS the metal head have very hard damper, if the head rpm slow down they start a involontary crab (alan specialty) fly. We try different head speed and must be over 2500, with 3000 / 3200 start be a nice gentle 3d machine.

I will send you more info after the modification, with some picture.

Is the control horn on the blade grips on the leading edge or trailing edge. IF they are on the trailing edge you are always going to have a slower cyclic. I don't know why these helis are being shipped this way. But If you want to fly 3d I recomend changing it.

I have just found the sure to slow roll rate, use trex 600 paddles and it is cured! It roll lightning fast now. I love this heli its so quiet and stable, but now when I go to flip its lightning fast!
