I'm curious to know if their are any new machines in the works right now. Particularly in the 90 size arena. We all know the current contenders (released and un-released) but I want to know if their is anything else in the works. I'd like to see a 8lbs 90 or something like that. The avro is nice, but a little on the pricey side. I'm waiting for the day when I can get MA quality for Align prices...

Compass models is in the R&D phase of their new Aeolus 90. It has some very innovative features that does away with the conventional fan attached to the engine. This allowed for a reverse stacked clutch/clutch bell. By reversing the clutch stack and eliminating the fan, the engine sits higher up in the frames for a higher CG for improved aerobatics. They brought one to IRCHA and it weighed in at about 9 lbs. RTF minus fuel.

Pretty bold to eliminate the fan altogether. I would not want to push that thing on a really hot day. Makes me wonder if the benefit of it being 9lbs is negated by not being able to run the engine at its peak power out of fear of overheating... Still, I like the design.

Hmmm, that's interesting. Is the cooling fan then powered by a separate battery? If so how many flights can one have before the cooling fan battery needs to be recharged?

On this prototype, there are actually 2 small PC style electric cooling fans. One above the head pushing that air over the engine and one below it pulling the air out. They are still tweaking the set up. I am not sure how much power this pulls from the battery, but they are using the rx battery to power them. With a 2S2P 5200 mah (or equivelant) Li-Ion battery, I really do not think it will be too much of a concern.

Neat idea, but I would want to see some serious testing in some hot weather before I took the plunge. Those computer cooling fans are pretty efficient as fas as electrical consumption is concerned, but I do not know that they would move enough air? I could be wrong though, it does not hurt to test out something new...

They are doing comprehensive testing on it as we speak. The climate over there in Thailand (I think) is pretty hot and humid so if it can prove itself there, than I think it will do well elsewhere.

I would think 2 electric fans would be more effecient in cooling the engine than the draft generated by most fans bolted to the engine. most modern cars have 2 electric fans that produce better cooling and are quiet.

That scenario is quite a bit different since car engines are liquid cooled, and there is a lot of surface area on a radiator to help dissipate the heat.


I am eagerly awaiting more pics of the Aeolus. That is pretty innovative thinking, hopefully it works well and they are as affordable as Compass's other helis.

Couldn't tell from the pics, but it doesn't look like your planning on using any kind of shouding for the motor. On the two fans, is the air going to be ducted toward and around the motor?
If it is just "blowing" on the motor, then I cant see how it would be very benificial.
This is why,
I am not an engineer, so hopefully someone who is can explain this for you better, but basically When the motor gets hots and you just "blow" air at it, the heat generated off the motor creats a shild or bubble around the motor the deflects the air being "blown " at it. Thats why we dont use just open fans mounted on top on our regular heli motors but we use shrouds to guide and force the air around the motor cooling it.
