After read all here, I get excited. My R90 after hard crash sleeps in the heli-cemetery back of my small workshop. Think photos worth more than a thousand words

Question number one - cut the head ribs or make wider sides??

Have seen both solutions here. If i cut the head, the Zenoah engine fits in to the shroud perfectly. But to cut the head sides logically create smaller surface to cool the engine. Ideas from experienced body?? Thank you!

How much are you talking about cutting off? How hot does your engine normally run?

9 mm each side

Each side 9 mm. It means to cut almost 1/4 of the ribs or make lots spacers 3x10x9mm and keep the head as is. I did not counted yet how many of spacers i need.

I've done the conversion, so have several other people. Everything you need to know is in this thread. Its a lot of work but if done right works great.

That looks like a bit of a project you have on your hands.

I decided to cut the fins and try it and if the worst happened it happened.
I’m running a head speed of 1750 and I’m having no problems what so ever, all I’ve done since the conversion is put fuel in and fly it, I haven’t even had a bolt come lose apart from having to tighten the muffler down after the first flight and since that I've run a further 17 thanks of fuel with no problems.

Like Burnt offering says it’s all covered on the other thread.

And what about the clutch ,in that thread he mentioned lots of problems with the clutch as gasser engine is too strong , which clutch do you use that can withstand the torque of the engine ?

I used the Quick UK fan and Heavy Duty clutch and if you put the 90 clutch at the side of a Predator Gasser clutch the Raptor one is slightly bigger.

I think the 90 is bigger and can be used in the 60 as an upgrade but the one I used is the H/D clutch. Have a look on the Quick UK website

Problem with clutch

Burnt Offering: I have read your posts 10X ) Or more !! ?? Thank you for sharing shared the experience!

Fixit: I will believe after 170 tanks that there is not problem - anyway thanks for comments and advices!! I don't care about time - I want to make perfect. Even looks like big project. After happy end I can sell project to TT for million dollars Thank you!

darko: Yes i have the problem now - i bought the heli like R90 but after while, i found it was converted R60 to R90. The clutch at R60 is 37 mm diameter and R90 47 mm diameter. No idea how is the situation with the fan yet - Im searching the possibilities. Looks like i send the fan base to machine shop to make 1/5 taper. Another question is the shroud... But lets slow down and back to beginning. I decided to make precise spacers - not co cut the engine head. When done, i post pictures. Thank you again guys for advises!!

Anti-twist Engine Mount

darko:
Most conversion i have read about, have same problem: missed
Anti-twist Engine Mount what prevents frame twisting caused by hi-torque stress from the gasoline engine. The guy from CZ have same problem - keeps changing and upgrading clutch for bigger one, tuning and more expensive.. IMHO the engine have 3 mounting points: Front 4 bolts, side
2 bolts and head one bolt. I looked the Xcell manual and there is engine mounted like (i thing) should be. Im sure that engine mounted only at 5 mm thick aluminum cant be sufficient and durable solution..

If you mount the engine on a 5mm plate then secure it at the side and top it aint going nowhere, mine is rock solid, the main factor is to use Brunt’s idea and make two angle brackets for the top then you won’t be having any clutch problems.

Base plate typicall but wider

Spending more and more time in this project - thing get divorce soon
Just finished topper plate - the anti-twist engine mount and few spacers 9 mm just to see how all looks like. The topper plate is now base of all and all following quotes will be related to the top base. Thats mean, the base plate will be 18mm wider than the original TT part.
Going work see you soon back with pictures I hope

One step forward

Just received 2mm thick carbon sheet from Ebay seller. Nice, glossy, easy to work with using basic work shop tools. As you can see from the pictures, my old style CAD - pen and paper helping reach the goal

My CAD, antitwist base 2 mm of carbon and testing spacers.

Another step forward

Photos worth more than a thousand words

16 spacers now - needs 4 more for lower bearing block

Fan assy arived. Maded by friend who owns maschine shop.

Fan shroud. After few cuts and testings there is the result...
I don't like the cutted plastic legs. After i made the holes for carb and exhaust, there was not too much material left. Better to cut all and thing about new strong legs..

Clutch mounted

My wife came to see the project - nice wife, created gasser mascot

Looks bit better than the first picture at this threat no?

Nice work so far, it looks very professional.

I like the idea of securing the head to the frame spacer.

Looking forward to the next set of photos

3 points

It will have 3 points where the engine will be secured. So i thing, the stiffener base plate can be just the real R60 stiffener. Just 18 mm wider with bigger hole in the center. I'm just getting the ideas during the building process - so I don't know at this moment how is going to be few days later
