Main Discussion > 9zwc2 will not pass range check with gasser?

I have a brand new futaba 9z I finally after several hours have it all set up. However it will not pass a range check. I have changed crystal and frequencies. Nothing works. I did read in the instructions that you should always have the bottum part of the antenna extended when you are programing or settting up something. That I did not do and I remember the syn. module was very hot once. Is it possible that I the module up to the point where it only has a limited range?

I have sense ordered the regular type of module for it. Instead of the synthesizer module. That synthesizer is really neat ,but I guess I am just old fashioned an my feild is not at all crowded.

Frankly, it would seem to me that that is a crap (oops, ok, 'intolerant') design if it can't
either withstand a bit of high SWR from havning the antenna collapsed
or that they couldn't put a small thermistor on the output transistor
and shutdown the RF module when it sensed overheating.

I kind of agree that it is kind of a shaddy design myself. An if only that burnt it up I am wondering how long it will really last and just how much abuse it can handle.. I guess time will tell.

Part of the problem is that when the antennae is all the way down on the 9Z it isn't just collapsed, it's completly disconnected. That's the reason you have to pull out the large first section to range check it. Then you have the same amount of antennae that other transmitters have with the antennae collapsed. While it is good practice to extend the antennae while doing a long setup, being basicaly lazy, I very seldom do so. So far it hasn't hurt my standard module, I still get over 150 foot range checks on my five year old 9ZHW.

I once left my 8103 on for about an hour or so with the antenna collapsed while setting up my heli and the module was very hot and the next day i went out and it only got a 30 foot range check so I ordered another module and got atleast 150 feet (I usually stop after 150).

try the tx with another a/c, and try another tx with the heli

There are many probs that can lead to not passing a range check with a gasser, not just the module issue already mentioned. For example, you may have the rx antenna too close to the ignition module, the battery may be picking up noise and sending it to the rx...

On gasser airplanes, I have cleaned up noise, and increased a range check by more than 50 percent, just by making sure that the ignition electronics are at least a few inches away from ANY rx electronics, including the throttle servo.

I don't know how a heli gasser is set up generally...But merely wanted to mention that many possible causes exist that don't involve the tx...

Cheers!.

With all the same radio equipement on board it will pass the range check with my 8uhp. So it almost has to be the radio.

You could just replace it with a JR series, right DavidH? LOL

DavidH is correct, the 9Z have a metal case which shrouds the brodcast when the antanna is fully retracted, where the plastic case of the 8U will let it through. Pull the base of the antanna out of the radio to do your range test. It needs to be the base of the antanna, if you ll just pull the tip out, most of the antanna will be inside the case causing a feedback.

The module it getting hot due to a RF feed back from the antanna, if you range test fails with the antanna base out you may have damaged the RF module.

This is also the reason JR's antanna on the 10x unscrews.

You'd think they would put a warning label on the transmitter about pulling out the first section when turning on the radio.

Hot?

Even the JR series will do this. When you think how far they will transmit that is a lot of signal. If I don't use the dsc cord to program I will pull the antenna out a little and allways check the module for heat buildup as well. It will happen to any PCM radio.

Good luck
