e-JR Voyager E > Super Voyager E Flight Time?

Hi,

I purchased a JR Super Voyager E kit with a stock
motor and ESC combo. I'm currently using a TP3300
Extreme and another cheap 25C 3200mAh lipo. My flight
times are relatively short with both batteries, about
5 and a half min to 6. My flight style is quite mild,
nothing hard or pushing. I'm wondering if these flight
times are too short or just about right? And also if
they're too short, what should I look more closely into?
Any suggestions?

Akira,

6 min are definitly too short! I have done about 5 flights - fun fly no 3d - for now, starting to set my timer at 7 min to see how much capacity has been used. My new Schulze charger puts ~ 2,7A.
The only problem i am facing for the moment are some vibrations starting after 7 minutes of flight.

I am using the rcommended Hacker Motor & ESC with FP EVO Lite 4250 in 3s.

Cheers

Thanks for your input.

>6 min are definitly too short!

I know and I'm not happy with that. It seems to take
roughly 420 to 450 mAh per a minute and puts back about
~2.5 A. I've tried different gear meshes and belt
tensions, but so far hasn't been successful in lengthening
the flight time.

I'm currently using metal swashplate, metal washout arms
from Quick Japan ( the ones for the older version VEs)
and a main gear plus metal main bearing blocks from K&S.
I'm afraid these metal parts contribute to making my SVE
a little heavier than a wholly stock version.

I haven't noticed any vibrations or wobbles, though, which
appeared ( and annoyed me ) on my older version VE due to
low head speeds.

What pitch and throttle curves are you running?

Pitch: -4 6 10
Throttle: line with offset set at 75% (Futaba T12Z). The ESC is running in governor mode.

I don't think the flight time is related to the upgrade parts. Maybe there are some timing problems with your motor (for the A30 it should be set to 22°). You can try to modify this settings with the X-PRO Software from Hacker (USB interface required)

PS: vibs are related to the tail but i did not have the time to take a closer look

Hello Michael,

Sorry for being so slow getting back. Thanks for the
links. I downloaded the PDF file and followed the instruction
there hoping I would be able to set up my ESC. However,
I could not enter the Set Up mode using my TX. I tried
more than a couple of times to no avail. I'm afraid that
the Set Up Mode has been deactivated at the factory...I'm
not sure.

So at the moment I could fiddle with my throttle curves
and pitch curves to get longer flights. ( Replacing
batts should maybe the first option, but I'm kind of
tight on budget and cannot afford new ones. )

My current set up:

Pitch Range +10 - -10
Pitch curves
Normal : 25% 37% 50% 75% 100%
ID 1 : 0 25 50 75 100
Throttle curves
Normal : 0 55 80 90 100
ID 1 :100 95 90 95 100

I recently found in the JR manual that I need to have my
throttle trim on TX at the lowest position, and followed
the instruction.

With the current setting, my TP 3300 Extreme lipo gives
me about 6 min or a little shorter of a flight time.

I called the JR Heli Division to ask about the
set up mode on the stock ESC, NHA-70-SB, and the
person who answered the phone told me that

1) I cannot enter the set up mode without a
cable to connect it to my PC
and
2) 8 minutes is an estimated flight time with
a 3300 mAH battery with the stock configuration

So I ordered the cable and it will be shipped
to me in a few days.

Throttle % for governor

Hi,Michael,

X-Pro-Interface has been delivered. I can now set up
my ESC on my PC with this interface cable.

I'm interested in running the ESC in governor mode,
and would like to learn a little more about your
ESC / TX settings.

Timing: 22 degrees, right?
Governor Mode: There are three modes, low, medium and
high. Which mode are you using?
My guess is High ( Mode 3). Am I correct?
Acceleration: Fast

Throttle %: Will flat line of 60 - 65% be Okay?

Thanks in advance for your help

Acceleration: High
Timing: 22 degrees
LVC threshold : 3.1 V

Throttle Curve:
Normal: 0 - 60 - 60- 60- 60
ID1 : 63 - 63 - 63- 63- 63
Battery: TP 3S 3300 Extreme
Flight Time: 6 min. 30 sec.
Flight : Hovering and figure 8's

Both the motor and the battery slight warm after the flight

About 2700 mA, a little over 80%. Probably the weight
is what makes my flight times short and a little
sluggish.

Akira,

your seetings are all correct now.
I did some fights with my new TP Extreme last week and i get the same results as you. In fact this is around 30s shorter as with the FP packs.

Michael,

Thank you for confirming my settings.

6 min and a half is long enough and just about
suitable for me because that's probably the longest
I can maintain my concentration.

I'm getting comfortable with nose-in ( at long last )
and I'm hoping my SVE will help me learn loops and
rolls.

cheers

Akira,

have a good time with your SVE - this is really a great heli.
If you are in the need of some new packs to extend your flight times try out the new Kokam H5 cells.

PS: I already placed an order for the upcoming SVE in 4s

Cheers

Michael,

You already ordered the upcoming 4s version? I'm afraid
I can't do that. Maybe I will just buy a conversion kit
instead.

Yes, I will try to enjoy my SVE. I hear some flyers here
in Japan are using 2500mAH packs, and that they can get
away with 6 min flights mainly because of the less weight.
I may try to pursue that route.

Anyways, thanks again for your help.

Does this mean that the stock SVE ESC is exactly the same as the regular Hacker ESC? Especially is it OK to upgrade to latest Hacker firmware? (I would have imagined that may be Hacker and JR developped a specific firmware for SVE)

Hello Akira, It's good that you'd confirmed with JR staff on programming the ESC. I have been trying to program the ESC on my newly converted SVE but to no avail untill I read your post. It's sad that the ESC on this SVE cannot be programmed through the radio transmitter. Can you please let me know where to mail order the X-Pro USB interface? I think the postage is very much cheaper if I order from Japan instead of US or Europe sites. Thanks.
