Any advice on how to cut fine threads on a lathe. Im trying to cut a thread onto a shaft 2.5mm diamater with 0.5 pitch.Ive had several attempts but quality is poor. My lathe is not an expensive one but has been quite adequate for most applications.Im using a 60 deg tool and cutting quite slow and making several passes.
Any advice much appreciated....thanks

Trying to threadcut small diameter stock with a single-point tool is one of life's most trying exercises. The work really needs to be supported with some sort of steady, diametrically opposite the tool point. The other technique is to mount a piece of metal in the toolpost just ahead of the cutting tool. The work passes through a hole in the metal - another sort of travelling steady.

Apart from that, and making sure the tool-point is exactly at centre height, not much else to suggest apart from use a die in the tailstock mount.

You can set the top slide to 30* and just progressivly cut the thread finishing with a light plunge cut that just "dusts" the surface to clean it up. You didn't say if you had a thread indicator on the lathe as the above will not be possible without it. You said you were making several passes so I guess you have or you just reverse back. At 30* you can cut slowly on one side of the V, until the final pass where you move in slightly with the cross slide.

For something that small I would just use a die on it, good results and easy.....

Thanks for the input on this topic. I will certainly be trying out all suggestions. My lathe doesnt have a thread dial indicator which is causing me some problems getting the thread in the same positon each time i make a cut. I have been trying to reverse the tool back by hand using the tailstock as a stop and setting the chuck each time to the same position by aliging to a pencil mark ....seems to work but not brilliant. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Yup, do as has been suggested.... use a die.....

Why try to re-invent the wheel ???

...I cant use a die as the threaded end of what im making is on the chuck side, I need to be able to cut it with a tool...thanks anyway..8-)

Not quite sure what you mean but there are left handed dies available if that might help.....

Maybe try not disengaging. Just switch off and brake (there will always be a cut to the depth of the thread at chuck end anyway). Ease the tool out say 0.2mm and reverse the lathe by hand so you do not lose your index each time. Go a little past the start point to take up the backlash in the gear train before the cut starts. Move the tool back in and do another pass. Good luck. The difference between a good fitter and turner and a poor one is practice and experience. If you've never made a mistake you've never tried it.
