Trying to do some research on start systems. I want one good system with adapters for 4mm (GPH) 5mm (Falcon) etc etc.. which one is best and are adapters still available?
MA and Pegae are the only ones I know of... can anyone help me out with my research???
Thanks in advance

I can only find info on the two....maybe this is all there is.
Can anyone tell me which is better?

MA works directly onto 6 mm, and on 5 mm shafts with an adapter. I have never seen a 4 mm adapter for the MA Pro Flex starter. While MA do have a part number for the 5 mm adapter, noone I've tried ever has them.

Pegae have adapters for 6, 5, and 4 mm. The start bearing is somewhat larger, so it could be more reliable. However I don't think that many people have had problems with the MA start bearing.

Pegae require adapters on 6 mm shafts, which are affixed with a setscrew. Setscrews mar the suface of the start shaft, which can lead to problems removing clutch and pinion bearings later on.

You can also consider hex starts. Hex adapters are availble for all start shaft sizes. The Robbe clutch uses a hex recessed into the top of the clutch assembly without a shaft, so it's not easy to adapt it to anything else. Vario also have a hex arrangement that does not lend itself to other schemes. So, the most universal system would be a hex start.

Let me offer you some thoughts and a suggestion. I too was in the same quandary as you. I was accumulating several start shafts to start all my different machines. I was getting real frustrated that all the manufactures had something different. Heck Hirobo has 2 different types in its line up. Well I got tired of it all. I looked at Pegae and almost went to it. But at the same time Big Block engines where coming on. I had heard of some issues with the pegae failing during use on the Big Blocks.

After listening to others and knowing how I had things going on my machines I ended up with a 6mm Hex adapter with built in one way bearing. All my machines are using a 6mm hex adapter of some sort. This is working great for me. I have been using this system on everything for 1 1/2 years and never regretted it. I have hard mounted my 6mm start adapter to my starter’s shaft and have never had to remove it again.

The Pegae has a "hex" adapter that plugs right into the end.

My 4 year old Pegae starts my YS 91, no problem with the Torrington bearing slipping.

I just realized replying to this thread that I am trying to work around the old with the new. I think it's time to welcome in a new X-spec..........
or maybe a Predator or both...........yeah, that way I can tell the wife I don't need a new starter, LOL
