Tools and Field Equipment > How accurate is the sky tach?

I just picked up a sky tach, after a year and a half of putting it off. First off, I can't believe that it cost me $90, as the functionality and craftsmanship was less than expected. Anyhow, I'm wondering about the accuracy of the unit.

I tested it on my MX450 and I was surprised at the readings. Motor package in that bird is a 430L, 35amp ESC both from align (SE drivetrain), 3cell, 2150mah 20C packs, 138tooth main gear, 11 tooth pinion, throttle is about 85%-90% during hovering, running 325 CF blades. A headspeed calculator puts the headspeed around 2800rpm, when tested, the tach shows a hovering headspeed of only 1350rpm. I was really surprised since this bird flys amazing and has plenty of climb-out power.

Something just doesn't add up. Can someone shed their opinion, or their experience with this tach?

If you set your meter to the speed you think it should be, then fine-adjust it, that could work.

It may be reading half the speed, 1350 x 2 = 2700 which is nearly right. Just experienced a similar problem setting up a new electric heli.

Yup, Peefor is right. That's why you could use a Miniature Aircraft tach on a TRex. Even though the maximum rpm on the old MA tachs was about 2100, you could get the blades stopped in the window at 1300 or more and just double the value to get your true RPM.

spool the tach up untill you see more than two blades in it and then go does untill you only see two and that will ba the actual headspeed. it basicaly blinks what you see and if it is at half the headspeed it blinks every two revolutions instead of one to show you half the actual headspeed.

Tachs are a great tool to use at the field, knowning your precise rpm on the rotar head is important. Jagged Edge
