For the life of me I cant fly my heli by pinching the sticks, must fly with my thumbs, I guess this comes from 32 years of fixed wing RC flying by thumb, is there any simple way to over come this or does it just take a hell of a lot of practice? Is there any big name 3D pilots out there that fly with thumbs?....Jim

well, you would just have to keep practicing...though there are a lot of pilot who fly thumbs...it's really hard to change.

I also had lots of stick time with planks, using thumbs, before I started helis. With helis, I ONLY feel comfortable pinching. I started that way and never have used thumbs. Just can't get the fine control needed without two fingers.

I use my thumb on top and finger on the front, It slows things down and I can still do quick stick movements by removing my finger.

You don't say if you use a neck strap, usually how you hold the transmitter has an effect on how comfortable "pinch" will be.

Just remember -- if the world didn't suck, we would fall off.

Comming from the video game generations, thumbs are more natural for me. Years of first person shooters earned me accurate thumbs. Gotta get them head shots

I've been flying for almost 50 years, both planks and helis, and
have always been a thumbs flyler. This March I lost my my left thumb
to an incredibly stupid (my fault) accident with a 40% plank and it
came out the winner. I can no longer hold a transmitter so I had
to resort to a tray and fly with index/middle finger on left stick
and pinch on right stick. Now that's real incentive to make the change but I don't recommend it. First few flights using the new
technique weren't real smooth but it's getting better little by
little. The good news is that I'm actually flying a little better than before as I have to concentrate more and it shows. The bad news
is that I wasn't a top notch pilot after all these years and I'm
still not and never will be but it's about having fun anyway and
I'm able to do that. Bottom line is that you can do anything you
put your mind to and are willing to put forth the effort. Best of
luck with the transition.

stick with what is comfy

lots of great pilots fly thumbs.. so just do what works for you and not worry about what "advise" people give you.

Go to the 07 IRCHCA videos and watch szabo working the sticks w/ finger and thumb . I had to hold onto the chair with both hands and feet watching him work it . That dude is an display of thumb and finger stick stirrin !!!! Oh yeah i'm a thumber !!!

Learn to 3D or die trying !!!!

Believe it or not, Peter Niotis is also a thumber and his nickname is "smooth operator"... it all comes down to practice and "feel". Go grab some of his videos and be in shock.

It cost me a whole flying season to switch from thumbs to pinch, but that was after flying thumbs for only 3 years though and it was well worth it.
